THURSDAY. JUNE 22. 1961 Alums Over 1,000 alumni trekked back to their alma mater last weekend to be celebrated, to meet old class mates and to see their school "grow and grow and grow." Their weekend was filled with luncheons, lectures and parades, but as one old-timer said, "the most fun of the visit is just walking around." Many of those who have not returned for a while were amazed at the University's expan sion. Hammond and Pollock Circle were two points of fascination for them. The oldest alumnus to return this year was Harry 0. Way of the class of 1899. He graduated two years before the Alma Mater was written, five years before freshman customs and 11 years before the first summer session. REGISTERING for the various Reunion Weekend activities is J. Limvood Johnson, class of '25. VANCE PACKARD RECEIVES DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD—President Walker presents the award to Packard, well known author of "Hidden Persuaders," "Wastemakers" and "Status Seekers." Dean Osborn introduced Packard and the four other award recipients to Walker. The Long Graying Line Return to Campus The alumni bring back memories of the tra ditions of the University: A University that has increased its student body from 119 to over 18,000. It has increased its staff from four to close to 4,000. Its physical plant has increased from an in complete five-story building to over 140 major structures. Its resident instruction program grew from 40 courses to more than 3,200. There are many more changes that, although they are not evident to the present undergrad uates, are most apparent to alumni, And this is one reason why it must be a lot of fun to "just walk around."
