SATURDAY. FEBRUARY 25. 1961 Lion Cagers Hope to End Losing Streak Against Pitt By SANDY PADWE The last time Penn State won a basketball game was two weeks ago and the victims were the Pitt Panthers, State's opponent at the Pitt Field House tonight. Since their 73-59 victory at Rec Hall Feb. 11, the Lions have dropped four straight and conse quently their chances for a win ning season rest heavily on to night's game. They have a 9-11 mark with four games to play—so a slip against Pitt could mean trouble. The Panthers can't afford any slips either. They have an 11-11 record and tonight's game is their last. A near-capacity crowd is ex pected for tonight's Easter-Seal Tripleheader which begins at 9:30 with Carnegie Tech-Grove City. The Pittsburgh Wheelers face the Johnstown Wheelers in the middle encounter with State and Pitt winding up the festivities at approximately 9:30. Even though Pitt, is playing .500 ball, the Panthers are ex tremely tough on their home floor with 10 wins in 13 games. Their only win away from home was an 80-75 overtime victory over NIT-bound Temple, Penn, State's foe at Rec Hall Tuesday.' Los Angeles Angels By BILL RIGNEY PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (I') I'd like to clear up one thing right at the beginning. No one in the Los Angeles Angels organiza tion, myself included, thinks our team will be as bad as most ea• perts are predicting. My personal opinion is that we came up with some good, expe rienced players in the expansion draft and a few others who will help us in the future. I've always liked to have a club with power and there's no doubt we'll have plenty of "crash" with Ted Kluszewski, - Bob Cery and Steve Bilko. Wrigley Field, our home park, is ideal for sluggers and you're going to see plenty of home runs by these three. At the moment. I'm undecid ed whether it will be Kluszew ski or Bilko at first base. We also have Julio Becquer. a good glove man. I was especially happy to get Ken Aspromonte from Cleveland for second base. VIZZSPIE RUSHING SMOKER . . Nevertheless, Lion coach John Egli has the jitters. "You never know what to expect when you play them in Pittsburgh," Egli said. "Heck, we've beaten them here the last two years but then we go there and lose. You figure it out. "We'll have to be at our best He had a fine year with the In dians. Eddie Yost is good for another year or two of solid play at third base. Ken Hamlin does a good fielding job at shortstop • and we're going to work on his bat ting in spring training. We're fortunate to have a couple of exceptional youngsters to go with Cery in the outfield. Ken Hunt, from the Yankees, and Jim McAnany, from the White Sox, are the two. Behind them, I have Faye Throneberry and little Albie Pearson, both experienced big leaguers. Egli is hoping that the familiar atmosphere of the Field House will help State tonight. Three of his starters Mark DuMars, Gene Harris, and John Mitchell are products' of Pitts burgh and Western Pennsylvania basketball. Harris played for Pittsburgh's Schenley High while Mitchell was a standout for Pittsburgh Central Catholic. DuMars played at Sharon High School but he made fre quent trips to the Field House during the WPIAL playoffs. Penn State's other starters to night will be Jake Trueblood and Earl Hoffman. Pitt will go with John Fridley, Dick Falenski, Ben Jinks, Don Steinhart and Torn Maloney.
