The story concerns the aging t
and useless Russian aristocrat
Madame Ranevskaya and her
problems with the changing ,
Russian social order at the turn
of the century. Having lost most
of her wealth she is faced with
the problem of supporting her
ex-lover in Paris and protecting
herself from enroachment on
her social standing by the mys
terious Lopahin, a member of
the rising merchant class.
In this play Chekhov has pre
sented a candid glimpse of the
social problems leading to the
Russian Revolution.
According to Harvey Whitten.

Richard Mason, set designer for
the playhouse, will have ample,
opportunity to practice his skill,
in this production. The play calls,
for three changes of sets, the first
time this has been attempted at
Mateer this season.
According to Mason, there will
be two indoor scenes and an out
door scene. An interesting feature
of the set will be a real log cabin
constructed fro mtimber cut near
the playhouse.
