PAGE TWO The story concerns the aging t and useless Russian aristocrat Madame Ranevskaya and her problems with the changing , Russian social order at the turn of the century. Having lost most of her wealth she is faced with the problem of supporting her ex-lover in Paris and protecting herself from enroachment on her social standing by the mys terious Lopahin, a member of the rising merchant class. In this play Chekhov has pre sented a candid glimpse of the social problems leading to the Russian Revolution.
