Modern To Play University students will have an opportunity tomorrow to hear some of the outstanding modern jazz artists on the East coast. The Penn State Jazz Club'will present a Jazz Revue at 2:30 p.m. in Recreation Hall. - Among the headliners wil Gerry Mulligan Quartet, The Les Jazz Modes and The Kai Wind i ng Septet. Miss Connor and The Kai' Winding Septet appeared at the University last year. Tickets are on sale at the Het zel Union desk, the Music Room and at the door of Rec Hall for $1.75. Students may also buy a membership to the Jazz Club for $2 plus $1 admission to the re vue at Rec Hall. A membership card will entitle them to reduced rates for future jazz club presen tations. Sang With Kenton Miss Connor, who first gained recognition when she replaced June Christy for two years with the Stan Kenton band, will sing with a rhythm section composed of musicians from the other jazz groups. Miss Connor has toured the country since she left Kenton as a nightclub singer. One of her most successful recent record al bums is titled "Lullaby in Bird land." Gerry Mulligan's band is the first pianoless quartet in the jazz field since the 1920's when DLxie land was at its peak. Mulligan Wan Polls Recently Mulligan has won numerous polls in Downbeat. Met ronome and Playboy for his trom bone playing. His present quartet features Bob Brookmeyer on the valve trombone, a bass and drum. The Les Jazz Quintet is the newest of the jazz groups to achieve recognition. The quintet features Julie Watkins on the French horn, Oscar Pettiford on the string bass or cello, a tenor saxophone, drum and piano. The band is an experimental one, try ing to achieve a "different sound" by using an unusual selection of instruments. Kai Winding, who appeared here last year with J. J. Johnson, has since formed his own band with four trombones, piano, bass and drum. Winding came here 'from his native country. Den mark, as a young man. After play ing trombone for Kenton, Woody Herman and other name bands.te joined with Johnson. Mitchell Morse, assistant professor of English composition,' will speak on "Freedom from Cen sorship" at 8 p.m. tomorrow at the Hillel auditorium. Dr. Morse's literary source for this lecture will be "Areopagitica" by John Milton of seventeenth century England. "Areopagitica", is one of the classic documents on freedom of thought and speech' as the fundamental condition of a successful quest for truth. Dr. Morse's talk will be the third lecture in the Hillel cul tural committee's current series ' on the general theme "The Struc ture of Freedom." A question period will follow th( lecture, which is open to the public.
