Coach Joe Bedenk's squad will face the West Virginia Moun taineers in a doubleheader on the Beaver Field diamond. Keith Vesling, who - posted a 9-2 record last season, will handle the mound duties for the Lions in the onener and Garland Gingerich flitch the niehtcan. However, if Vesling is unable to go the route Gingerich will take 'over. In the event that Vesling and Gingerich are both used in the nnener. either Dave Lucas or Wendell. Lorimer will get the ca'' in the second contest. Mountaineers 3-0- Steve Itarrik's Mountaineers have won their first three games this spring. Although the Hillbil lies were hit hard by graduation they still possess some fine talent. Penn State and West Virginia first met in baseball combat in 1904 and during the 'half century since then the Lions have won 25 of 35 games. Last season the two teams split , a doubleheader at Morgantown, the Lions winning the first game in 12 innings, 5-4, and dropping the second, 3-0. Gingerich posted four wins and three losses last season and led the mound corps with a 1.49 earned run average. Vesling had a 1.83, earned run average for 98% innings of pitching. Three Good Catchers George Ettenger will be behind the plate in the first game and either Art Cusick or Phil. Saund ers will do the ,catching in the second contest. All three are fine receivers and should fill the gap left by the graduation of Bill Leonard, last year's No. 1 catcher. The only change from last year's infield will be at shortstop where Francis Bowman will replace Ron Weidenhammer. Bedenk has de cided to use Weidenhammer in centerfield this season. Other in fielders will be Pat Kennedy at first, Charlie Russo at second, and Hubie Kline at third. Thinclads * pen At Ohio Relays A strong Penn State track and field team opens its 1954 season next Saturday against a field of 10 midwestern colleges in the an nual Ohio Relays, at Columbus, Ohio. The Lions will face such for midable entries as Illinois, Purdue ; Michigan, Michigan State, Wis consin, Ohio State, Wayne, Michigan Normal, and Ohio Wesleyan, A strong possibility also looms that Pitt. Miami, Notre Dame, and Indiana. will get into the act. The four schools are scheduled to meet in dual competition that day but may move the_date ahead, in order to participate in the meet. Lion Coach Chick Werner has indicated that he will enter 14 men in the event. The Lions will go through time trials this after noon and there is a possibility that Werner may add four more parti cipants to the Penn State entry Werner will enter men in the pole vault, shot put, discus throW, broad jump, 120-yard high hur dles, 100-yard dash, one mile run, and 114 mile run. In the relays, the Nittanies will be after honors in the .distance medley, 880 yard, and one mile relay. In the field events, , Werner will have Captain Dan Lorch gunning for, the pole vault win, Rosey Grier THE DAILY COLLEGIAN, STATE COLLEGE PENNVIVAMA and Chuck. Blockson in the weights, and Ron Johnson in the broad jump. .Ten elperienced runners with equal abilities will be entered in the running events. 011ie. Sad., Dave Leathern, Art Pollard, Skip Slocum, Bob Matz, Bruce Austin, Don Austin, Red Hollen, and Doug Moorhead will all see action on. the cinders. Werner did not indicate who would be running in the various events. That will probably come following the time trials this af ternoon. The Ohio test is actually a tune up for the giant Penn Relays, scheduled for April 23-24 in Phil adelphia. Following that the dual meet season will open. Navy, Pitt, and Michigan State all will appear at Beaver Field. The . thinclads finish the season in New York City with Manhattan and finally, the ICAAAA championship. Willie Pep Retired By Athletic Group NEW YORK, April 9 (R)—Wil lie Pep of Hartford, Conn.., former featherweight champion, was re tired from boxing today in New York State as the result of an ex amination by State Athletic Com - - mission physicians. Pep was stopped in 1:53 of the second round by Lulu Perez at Madison Square Garden Feb. 26. The referee halted the fight on the automatic 3-knockdown rule and Pep was suspended after the bout. Lion Party to Elect Officers Tomorrow Lion Party Steering commit tee will elect clique and vice clique chairmen at 2 p.m. tomor row in 317 Willard. To Exhibit Writings • A collection of books, poems, and other writings by alumni, for mer students, and faculty will be -xhibitcd at the University Li brary from Monday until the end of the month. * * Beaver Field is Site Of Lacrosse Game The Penn State lacrosse season opens today at Beaver Field when coach Nick Thiel's Lions meet the Kenyon Col lege Lords in a game to begin at 2 p.m. The visitors from Gambier, Ohio have two games already under their belt and in each case they were defeated. The Lords opened their season with a 12-6 loss to Washington College and followed with a 12-5 loss to Pennsylvania. Kenyon College, coached by William Stiles, are Mid-Western Champions. Last year the Lords won eight games while dropping only one, 15-6 to Washington Col lege. The defeat did not affect their Mid-West title chances, how ever. To gain the crown, the Lords had to beat Oberlin and Ohio State University each twice, and Denison once Stiles is in the process of shuf fling his players in and out of the line-up . until he comes up with a winning combination. One boy who is sure to see plenty of ac tion, though, is Tookie Cole. Cole, leading scorer for the Lords last season, has registered four goals to date in two games. He earned a position on the Midwest All- Star first team as a result of the fine play he turned in during last season. He averaged three . gOals a ,game. The Lords are strong _on the attack and defense, but lack needed experience at the mid field. Jack Gammon is the only seasoned player among the five who are expected to sed midfield action. George Thomas and Dick Evans will join Gamthon on the tentative starting midfield line. Bob King and Al McCormick are certain to play, too. The Lords lost a midfield star by graduation when Bruce Pennington left them last June. Cole, senior Fred Papsin, and Jim Wallace will form the attack with Al Spievack listed as fourth man. Seniors Butch Aulenback and Joe Culp join Phil Bently in making up the defensive line. Bob First will fit into the de fensive picture also. Stiles will have Rockie Nel son at goal.
