Beaver Field is Site
Of Lacrosse Game
The Penn State lacrosse season opens today at Beaver
Field when coach Nick Thiel's Lions meet the Kenyon Col
lege Lords in a game to begin at 2 p.m.
The visitors from Gambier, Ohio have two games already
under their belt and in each case they were defeated. The
Lords opened their season with
a 12-6 loss to Washington College
and followed with a 12-5 loss to
Pennsylvania.
Kenyon College, coached by
William Stiles, are Mid-Western
Champions. Last year the Lords
won eight games while dropping
only one, 15-6 to Washington Col
lege. The defeat did not affect
their Mid-West title chances, how
ever. To gain the crown, the
Lords had to beat Oberlin and
Ohio State University each twice,
and Denison once
Stiles is in the process of shuf
fling his players in and out of the
line-up . until he comes up with
a winning combination. One boy
who is sure to see plenty of ac
tion, though, is Tookie Cole. Cole,
leading scorer for the Lords last
season, has registered four goals
to date in two games. He earned
a position on the Midwest All-
Star first team as a result of the
fine play he turned in during last
season. He averaged three . gOals
a ,game.
The Lords are strong
_on the
attack and defense, but lack
needed experience at the mid
field. Jack Gammon is the only
seasoned player among the five
who are expected to sed midfield
action. George Thomas and Dick
Evans will join Gamthon on the
tentative starting midfield line.
Bob King and Al McCormick are
certain to play, too. The Lords lost
a midfield star by graduation
when Bruce Pennington left them
last June.
Cole, senior Fred Papsin, and
Jim Wallace will form the attack
with Al Spievack listed as fourth
man. Seniors Butch Aulenback
and Joe Culp join Phil Bently in
making up the defensive line.
Bob First will fit into the de
fensive picture also.
Stiles will have Rockie Nel
son at goal. Three promising
freshmen will no doubt see action
for extra
holiday time..
