PAGE EIGT4T Mendelssohn Preview Taylor 'Elijah' Mrs. Willa W. Taylor, professor of music education, will present in story and record the "Elijah" in a fireside discussion at 6:30 to night in Simmons lounge. The "Elijah" is an oratorio by Mendels . sohn which will be presented by Chapel Choir in the spring. Mrs. Taylor will explain the early beginnings of the oratorio and review the biblical history upon which the libretto is based. She will also discuss Mendelssohn's background to give her audience a fuller interpretation of his mus ic. Musical scores will be provided for the participants in the discus sion so that they can follow as the music is played. Through the use of the "Elijah," Mrs. Taylor will discuss how reli gion shows in mus i c. Simmons and Atherton Halls will combine for this discussion, but women from other dorms may attend. Student chairmen for the fireside discussion are Nancy Bodman and Louise Moreman. - - - - - A second fireside will be held for coeds in Woman's Building and the cottage at 7 tonight in Woman's Building. Dorothy Harp ster, head of the Department of English at the State College High School, will speak. Her topic, "Does it Make a Difference to Be a Christian?" will emphasize what makes a person different because he tries to follow Christian prin ciples. Merger-- - (Continued from page one) of Men Frank J: Simes had sug gested the council take direct supervision of the social activi ties in the area. Simes made the proposal at the dean of men's advisory conference Friday. Steindel told the council the Barons suffered because there was no compulsory attendance re quirements at its meetings. Leßoy Wise, an area resident counselor, said, however, the Barons failed because of apathy among the men in the area. "If you don't want it to work, it won't work," Wise said. Steindel said "We'll have some jurisdiction over the com mittee." The social chairmen of each dormitory in the area will meet at 6:30 tonight in Dormitory 20 to elect a chairman for the com mittee and to receive. an expla nation of the social organization. The chairman of the social com mittee will attend meetings of Nittany Council. When the new council is es tablished, Steindel said, the chair man of the social committee, will be appointed by the council presi dent. The council voted that partici pation in Spring Week, a project of the Barons in the past, will be conducted by the social com mittee. In other actions, the council approved a proposal to submit a letter to the Housing department asking that a cigarette machine be c placed in the lobby of Dormi- ~$ ~ ƒ ~~: %~ ~ / > y: $~ . ~ \~ ~ \ Players Hold Poster Contests For 'Salesman' Two separate poster contests are being held by ,players for their production of Arthur Mil ler's "Death of a Salesman," ac cording to Kelly Yeaton, associ ate professor of dramatics. The first competition is for spe cial posters not designed for mass production. These may be of any nature and in any medium. Al though both competitions are open to faculty and students, only students may receive the cash prizes awarded to the highest ranking posters. The second contest is for pos ters designed to be reproduced by the silk-screen process in mass production. The posters will be judged ac cording to effectiveness in attract ing a sympathetic audience, legi bility, and the artistic quality of design. Always- willing to try some thing new, Jack Moran is now try ing to learn how to play ping pong. Upon hearing that one of the judges on the National Ping- Pong Committee was blind, Jack thought that "If a man can be blind and still judge ping-pong tournaments, I certainly should be able to at least learn how to play the game." By listening carefully to the sound of the ball hitting the table, Jack is trying to judge the angle at which it should bounce. At present he is able to return the ball. • Besides singing, Jack's hobbies 'include strumming on a four string guitar, i slapping bongo drums, and fishing. A fishing en thusiast, his immediate desire is to . cast his bait at Fishermen's Paradise ab6ut which he has heard so much. - After graduation Jack plans to attend graduate school and then enter the Industry Placement Service for the Blind, a service that depends upon the leader ship of both man and companion.
