a \ n r T? c r** Cogers Seek To Snap Jinx When the Nittany Lion basketball team meets Pennsylvania in Philadelphia Saturday Elmer Gross’ quintet will be seeking its first win at the Penn Palestra since 1939 when Charley Posser led the Nittanies to a 34-21 victory over the Quakers. In fact the Lions have succumbed to the Red and Blue 25 times m the 31 games that the two teams have played. Since Howard Dall mar took over the coaching chores Penn has won four games against the Lions starting in 1950 when they whipped the Lions 66-49. The following year it was 61-58, and then in 1952 the Philadelphians edged State, 54-52, and came back with a nip-and-tuck 60-56 victory last winter. '■ Three Regulars Refurn The Quakers this year figure to be good, but not so good as the 1952-53 team which won the Eastern Intercollegiate basketball league. Dallmar has only three returning regulars but can count on top-rate performances from several promising sophomores. Gone is the great Ernie Beck who was named on just about everybody’s all-America last year. However, Dallmar still has for ward and captain Dick Heylmun who was the number two man in the scoring department last year with 328 points. He scored 22 points to lead Penn to victory in their opening game against Delaware last week. Sturgis at Center Forward Bart Leach and jun ior guard Karl Hoagland, the other two regulars, will be in the lineup against the Lions. Leach tallied 218 points last year and Hoagland scored 230. Frank Vi tetta will fill the other guard po sition and sophomore Joe Stur gis will replace Beck at the pivot spot State Is Second In Lambert Poll Army is named winner of ihe 1953 Lambert Trophy, symbolizing Eastern football supremacy, according' to the Associated Press. Penn State tied Penn in the ratings for second place. The Cadets, who lost only one game in ten, received 36 of the 40 first place voles. Penn and Penn State each re ceived two. It is the sixth time in ihe 19 years of ihe trophy that the Cadets have won, the Associ ated Press said. Their previous victories were in 1944, 1945, 1946, 1948. and 1949. IM Teams Advance In 3 Loops Three teams moved to top po- • sitions in their respective leagues Tuesday as nine intramural frat ernity court contests were played in Rec Hall. , Theta Kappa Phi moved to first place in league C with a 30-10 victory over Sigma Phi Alpha. Gabe Lensack tallied 10 points for the winners. In League D, Theta Xi moved to a first place tie with Sigma Nu by trouncing Sigma Phi Epsilon, 19-10. The other new top spot m league F was captured by Alpha Tau Omega via a 31-10 win over Kappa Alpha Psi. John Blackwell scored all the loser’s points while Fred Dorrell cut the nets for 14. In a high scoring contest, the Triangle five outlasted Pi Kappa Alpha, 39-29. Dave Shoop led the winners with 19 points, racking up the highest individual total of the evening. Alpha Phi Delta picked up its first win of the campaign with a 21-11 effort against Delta Theta Sigma. Charles Russo and Orlando No tari shared 18 of the victors tal lies. . Gilbert, assistant director of athletics at the Uni versity, was re-elected president of the Eastern Intercollegiate As sociation last night and the group set the 1955 Eastern wrestling championships for March 11-12 at Rec Hall, according to an Associ ated Press release yesterday Separate league meetings were held yesterday preliminary to the annual Eastern College Athletic Conference schedule-making con vention today and tomorrow. The association -.set the 1956 Eastern wrestling championships for March 9-10 at Lehigh. The University of Virginia, re cently granted membership in the Atlantic Coast Conference, with drew from, the Eastern Inter collegiate Golf Association and the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrest ling Association. MIT also re signed from the golf association, which still has 15 members, the Associated Press said. Pitt was admitted to member ship in the wrestling association. Nine freshmen were awarded numerals and Paul Roberts was selected honorary captain of the frosh team by his teammates. John Speer was named manager for next year’s team. Smith, a junior, was one of the outstanding men on the squad during the past season. He set a' new record for the five-mile course at Annapolis this season when he was clocked at 26:40.5. , He finished first, or tied for first, -i in three dual meets and one tri angular meet this year. He placed fifth in the IC4A title race and 13th in the NCAA championship race this year. Chick Werner, Nittany coach, awarded 11 varsity letters —one going to Bob Dahle, this year’s manager.
