PAGE EIGHT New Wing of Pattee Library NEW LIBRARY WING is now in the final stag.s of construction. Work on the new unit was started in August, 1951. This view shows the northwest exposure which features a wall Unit to Increase Library Space Stack capacity will be tripled and study facilities doubled when the new unit to - the Pattee Li brary is completed and opened for business. The new Wing, in its 25th month of construction, will be opened as soon as the General State Au thority inspectors give their offi cial go-ahead. The wing - has al ready undergone a pre-final con struction examination. Ralph. W. McComb, librarian, said the new wing will swell the total working capacity to nearly 600,000 volumes. McComb said the new stacks on the ground floor alone will provide facilities for as many books as are cur rently, crowded into the stacks of the original building. Graduate students and faculty will be provided study 'facilities with -the addition of 168 carrells to the 60 'now located in the li brary and the opening of six small rooms for students. . The east and west reading rooms on the first floor will be entered from a central room, formed by the removal of two partitions and a corridor between the former newspaper room and the open shelf reserve room. A similar arrangement will befound on the second floor where the new west room with adjoining stacks will be used for periodi cals. The main circulation, desk will be moved to the east room on the second floor. Chairs and tables in this room will provide work, ing space for students using books that may not be taken from the library. A pneumatic tube system from the main circulation desk to the stacks will provide transmission of requests for books and a book conveyer will automatically carry books to the desk. The new wing is constructed of brick and limestone and is designed to harmonize with the original section of the - library which was built 15 years ago. larger numbers of books. The steel support up rights are also removable so sec tions of the stack area may be cleared for other uses. The new wing, of masonry and steel construction cost $1.2 million. Faculty members will be asked to designate their funds to any of the following organizations: I Penn State Christian Association, World University Service, Penn State Student Scholarship Fund, and WSGA Christmas Fund. The Penn State Scholarship fund, which was included as a member organization in the En campment Report, was removed from the list of groups covered by an amendment to the resolu tion.
