It was the second successive shutout administered to the Cava liers of Virginia by the Lions. Last year the grapplers \von, 34-0. Previously Unbeaten Tackling the Virginia team before approximately 1500 eager spectators, the Nittany Lions captured their 21st consecutive dual, meet victory. The previously unbeaten Cavaliers had won their initial meet against Johns Hopkins, 24-5. • Coach Charlie Speidel said although the score may have been impressive, the meet was no test for the ever-strong Lehigh. "Some of our boys are slow starters," he added. "Virginia had a stubborn squad. They would oper ate in a shell, playing away from open wrestling. therefore, making it difficult for our boys to throw them. We had to manhandle them," the mentor said. 3 66 I • ns Gettysbor 300 U Collect irons By TED SOENS A crowd of 3000 yelling fans saw a well-balanced quin tet from Gettysturg make a last desperate attempt to over take the Lions last night, but they couldn't quite make it as they lost, 73-66. This is the first setbac:: season, and they now have a rec ord of seven wins in eight starts, while State is carrying a 7-3 record. Going into the game the Bullets had been averaging 88.1 points per game. Habeeb • Sinks Foul The Bullets put on a fine ex hibition of team play as they came up to within one point,of the Lions with but three minues left to go in the game. But the superior height of the Lions be gan to pay off, and Jack Sherry and Jesse Arnelle sank two jumps to pull the Staters ahead, 63-61. Gettysburg came right back NX rith a foul shot by Habeeb and two beautiful fakes and push shots by Bill Snyder to pull the opponents right back in the game at 62-65. But Arnelle added six more points, and Joe Piorkowski sank a foul to put the game on ice. Two State men fouled out in the final quarter Sledzik and Sherry. Build Up Lead The game started off with Gettysburg building up a 7-2 lead before the Lions began to find the mark. Then Piorkowski and Sledzik poured in seven points, and the Staters took a lead which they never relinquished although it was tied twice. ( First quarter score was tied at 21-21. Coming back in the second quarter the Lions built up a four point lead but again Gettysburg came from behind to close the gap. This occurred several times during the contest—the Lions would pull ahead, then the Bul lets would come up to, but never quite catch them. Arnelle, although off at the foul line making only five- out of 14, was the game's high scorer with 23. Captain Sledzik was next with 19, and Piorkowski was third with 13. Homan decisloned Thomas, 5-2, last year. With three minutes left 'in the final quarter, the score was tied 53-53 by virtue of a jump shot by Sherry. Pitt took the ball out of bounds and brought it down court where the Panthers des n-erately tried to find an Opening in the Lion defense. On a missed :hot by Dutch Burch, Arnelle -, cabbed a .rebound, but was , tiled by Pitt's Don Virostek. .this made five personals for the Panther forward, and he left the game. Arnelle missed *his first try but carefully dropped in his second attempt to make the score read 54-53 with two minutes to go. Haag Scores Pitt tried a- fast break, but a poor pass gave possession of the ball to the Lions. Ed Haag, from 20 feet out, tried a set and missed, but took his own rebound and the first two having , three for three and Keller. two for two. Turner was Virginia's leading scorer last 'year with 7-1-1 log. Hud Samson kept the Lions' prestige in the un limited class in fine style when he decisioned Vir ginia's John Braddon, 6-0.
