•: en Pin Virginia, 30-0, Capture 21st
nn State's Eastern Collegiate wrestling cham
pionship squad kept in tune with its all-important
dual meet with Lehigh this weekend when it drubbed
an ,Inept Virginia team Saturday, 30-0. It was the
second successive shutout administered to the Cava
liers of Virginia by the Lions. Last year the grapplers
\von, 34-0.
Previously Unbeaten
Tackling the Virginia team before approximately
1500 eager spectators, the Nittany Lions captured
their 21st consecutive dual, meet victory.
The previously unbeaten Cavaliers had won their
initial meet against Johns Hopkins, 24-5. •
Coach Charlie Speidel said although the score
may have been impressive, the meet was no test
for the ever-strong Lehigh. "Some of our boys are
slow starters," he added.
"Virginia had a stubborn squad. They would oper
ate in a shell, playing away from open wrestling.
therefore, making it difficult for our boys to throw
them. We had to manhandle them," the mentor said.

A crowd of 3000 yelling fans saw a well-balanced quin
tet from Gettysturg make a last desperate attempt to over
take the Lions last night, but they couldn't quite make it
as they lost, 73-66.
This is the first setbac::

while State is carrying a 7-3
record. Going into the game the
Bullets had been averaging 88.1
points per game.

came up to within one point,of
the Lions with but three minues
left to go in the game. But the
superior height of the Lions be
gan to pay off, and Jack Sherry
and Jesse Arnelle sank two jumps
to pull the Staters ahead, 63-61.
Gettysburg came right back
NX rith a foul shot by Habeeb and
two beautiful fakes and push
shots by Bill Snyder to pull the
opponents right back in the game
at 62-65.
But Arnelle added six more
points, and Joe Piorkowski sank
a foul to put the game on ice.
Two State men fouled out in the
final quarter Sledzik and Sherry.
Build Up Lead
The game started off with
Gettysburg building up a 7-2 lead
before the Lions began to find
the mark. Then Piorkowski and
Sledzik poured in seven points,
and the Staters took a lead which
they never relinquished although
it was tied twice. (
First quarter score was tied at
21-21. Coming back in the second
quarter the Lions built up a four
point lead but again Gettysburg
came from behind to close the
gap. This occurred several times
during the contest—the Lions
would pull ahead, then the Bul
lets would come up to, but never
quite catch them.
Perk Piays Good Ball
Trailing 29-36 just before the
half-time buzzer, the Bullets pat

Very Close Game •
Rebounding was the big factor
in both games. lii the Tartan con
test, it was the superior height of
the Lions that controlled the
boards and consequently the
game, while in the Pitt field
house, it- Was the Panthers who
took the majority of the rebounds.
The Pitt game was very. tight,
with the score changing hands
several times and neither team
able to get more than a five-point
lead.
With three minutes left 'in the
final quarter, the score was tied
53-53 by virtue of a jump shot
by Sherry. Pitt took the ball out
of bounds and brought it down
court where the Panthers des
n-erately tried to find an Opening
in the Lion defense. On a missed
:hot by Dutch Burch, Arnelle
-, cabbed a .rebound, but was
, tiled by Pitt's Don Virostek.
.this made five personals for the
Panther forward, and he left the
game. Arnelle missed *his first
try but carefully dropped in his
second attempt to make the score
read 54-53 with two minutes to
go.
Haag Scores
Pitt tried a- fast break, but a
poor pass gave possession of the
ball to the Lions. Ed Haag, from
20 feet out, tried a set and missed,
but took his own rebound and
the first two having , three for
three and Keller. two for two.
