TUESDAY, MAY 8, 1951 Superiority In Field Events Helps Navy Top Trackmen It wasn't quite the same as a victory over Army in foot ball. But after 18 years without a track win over a Chick Werner coached Penn State team the Navy's 82-49 triumph over the Lions in Annapolis Saturday was cause enough for the Midshipmen to pop off with a 21-gun salute. One of the strongest, best-bal anced Navy • teams in years trounced the Nittanies in the field events 43-11 and there hangs the tale of ,the meet. Bob Freebairn, Bill Ashen felter, John McCall, and Guy Kay gained the only clear cut vic tories while Owen Wilkenson, Vi c • Fritts and Jim Herb had to share first with the scrappy Mid dies , " 4 'k - Freebairn and Bill ASh led State's display of d i s tance power _ which greatly John McCall awed the Middies. Bob hit the tap first in the half-mile at 1:56.2, Bill in the two mile at 9:36.8 and both deliberately tied for first in a 4:19 mile. In the mile, which the Lions "grand slammed" by sweeping the first four places, Bill Ash opened a wide gap shortly after Navy's O'Grady faded at the half mile mark. With 220 to go, Free bairn pulled up and both, he and Bill rolled unpressed through the taue. Bill Ash stepped into the lead at the 220 of the two mile run and he wa s never pushed in romping to a 40-yard victory. Two Yard Gap Freebairn lagged off the pace early in the half-mile, then moved into third at the quarter pole. Bob saved his big kick until the last turn. There he made his move—a winning one by two yards over Middie Flynn. Stretch-running McCall let teammate Kay set the 440 pace until the run for the tape where Mac charged by all the leaders to snap the yarn first in 50.3. In State's final running victory, Kay, led' by a half-stride over most of the hurdle fight. Wilkinson, sailing higher than but falling on the bar at 13 feet, had to settle for a three-way pole vault tie at 12 foot 6 inches with Middies Morelli and foot baller Vic Vine. Fritts and Herb could do no better than 6 foot and a first place tie with Middie Ackerson in the high jump. Bill Lockhart, with gauze un ravelling from his taped thigh, was nipped by the Sailor's best sprinter, Branson, by 2 yards in the 220. Despite a blazing 49 second anchor quarter by McCall, the Navy 20-yard margin in the mile relay was too much to be over come. The Sailors won in 3:24 beating Mac by eight yards.
