WEDNESDAY, APRIL 4, 1951 Replacement Sought For Belfield At Attack This is the third and final in a series of articles on Penn State's lacrosse team. Today the Daily Collegian throws the spotlight on the attack positions. • With Coach Nick Thiel's ace playmaker, Eddie Belfield, lost throtzgh graduation, the. Lion mentor must find another man to set up his crease man and midfielders if the Nittanies are to have the scoring . power to carry them to ,a Just two lettermen return to bolster Thiel's close attack. Jim Reed -is the only regular on last year's squad who will appear at the attack for the Lions this spring. Ned Herring gain enough time to earn a letter, but didn't break into the starting lineup until Bud 'Wolfram was switched to the midfield. ' Reed, a, junior, is a good scorer and will play the crease for the Thielmen s this season. Herring Or Walker The job of filling the shoes of the-departed Belfield will fall to either herring or Doak Walker. Herring, working at the right hand home position, works good around the crease ,with Reed, and the two could develop into a good scoring combination. Walker, who , played on the Lion jayvee squad last season, will play the left-hand home position on the first squad. A good dodger and passer, Walker can control 'the ball better than Belfield could; but is not as accurate in his passes, Thiel ,believes. The Lion coach sees him developing with game • experience. The number four man in the attack is Dick Rostmeyer, a soph omore from Baltimore, the hot bed of United States lacrosse. Before coming to State, Rostmeyer was a goalie and had never play ed in the field. Thiel switched him over to the attack this year. A good stickhandler, he is coming along fast and is pushing Herring for a first-string position. Henderson Surprises Running in the fifth spot is diminutive Bernard Henderson who stands about 5 feet 6 inches. Henderson, a good dodger, has been 'a surprise to Thiel and his assistants. Behind Henderson, Thiel is .converting men from other positions and building for the future. "It should be a pretty good at tack," said Thiel. But he pointed out the absence of the scoring combination of Bob Louis and Benfield. YOUNG MEN'S SHOP'S SPECIAL FOR THE WEEK Unbelievable IMME=I young me s ts shop 127 s.allen COL! Timber-d (Continued from page six) beat out, either Cleveland or Bos ton. Detroit made its run for the money last year and at the end of the season was a dead-tired club. The reason was a weak bench. This trouble has not been remedied and added to it is a pitching staff that has seen better days. The Tigers will be out of ser ious contention by mid-August but will finish well above the other four teams. As for the remaining four clubs, they will spend the sum mer getting a worm's eye view of the flag chase. The positions from which they will do their looking are as fol lows: Washington in fifth, Phila delphia in sixth, St. Louis in sev enth, and Chicago in eighth. Tomorrow: The National League But True! Both men have been hit ting equally well. Clarence Buss, 1950's varsity catcher, will be unable to com pete Saturday since he has been overseas three weeks with the touring varsity soccer team. Har ry Little, third-baseman, falls in the same category as Buss, and he also will not be able to play. The soccer squad will return tomor row night. Bair Conditioning Arise Bill Bair, the only veteran moundsman, has been pitching a great deal of laptting practice this past week in order to get his sore arm in condition for a starting role in the not-too-distant future. Although Bair claims his arm feels fine after each daily work out, it is known that he still can not toss with the zing he had in his deliveries last spring. The starting array in the in field will be Stan Laganosky, a transplanted outfielder like Dougherty, at first base, Paul Mowry, a Scranton sandlot pro duct at shortstop, and Chris Ton nery, still another outer-gard ener, at third base. The only po sition that still remains a bit doubtful is the second base spot where Bill Mihalich seems to hold a slight edge over footballer, Jim Pollard. The outfield will be the same as for the past two weeks in practice sessions. The starting trio will consist of Henny Albright in left, rookie Sil Cerchie in center, and Bill Hooper in right. rAGE SMr.zz.
