FRIDAY, APRIL 21, 1950 AP News—Courtpsy WMAJ Budenz Dubs Lattimore Red Espionage Agent WASHINGTON —Louis Budenz, former editor of the Communist Daily Worker, yesterday testified before a Senate investigating committee that Owen Lattimore had been a member of a “Communist cell” that was engaged in espion age. Budenz also testified that Lattimore had been working with two men whom Budenz had named as Soviet agents. Testifying in Lattimore’s behalf, Brigadier General Elliot Thorpe, a retired Military Intelligence officer, stated that Lattimore was “in no way an agent of the Com munist party or of Soviet Russia.” Lattimore has already testified under oath that he is not now, nor ever had been an agent for the Soviet. Truth Campaign Set WASHINGTON Pres i d e n t Truman, speaking before the American Society of Newspaper Editors meeting here, said that the United States is in the midst of'a campaign of truth to convince the rest of the world that America has “no purpose of- going to • war except in defense of freedom.” Mr. Truman said that he has ordered Secretary of State Dean Acheson to put into effect a pro gram that will counteract Russian “deceit, distortion and lies.” Post Office Probe WASHINGTON —Trouble de veloped in Congress -yesterday for the Post Office Department’s economy program. Representative John Walsh (D-Ind.) indicated that he will ask Congress to re fuse the sharp cuts that are being planned in postal service. Falling in line with some of his Congres-- sional cohorts, Walsh said he will ask for a “sweeping investigation of the entire postal system.” THE DAILY COLLEGIAN. STATE COLLEGE, PENNSYLVANIA PSCA Banquet Commemorates 75th Birthday The Penn State Christian Asso ciation will commemorate its 75th anniversary with a banquet to be held at,Wink”s Skytop 6 p.m. to morrow. A dance will follow the dinner. Dr. Ralph Harlow, professor of religion and ethics at Smith Col lege, and Harry Seamans, former executive secretary of PSCA now serving with the Division of Pub lic Liaison of the Department-of State, will be the speakers. Dr. Harlow’s topic will : be “Fifty Years in the ' Christian Student Movement” and Seamans will talk on the past and future of the PSCA. Dr. George H. Young, as sistant director of the Mellon In stitute, has also been invited to speak. Dr. John Ferguson, chair man of tha anniversary commit tee, will be toastmaster.
