THURSDAY, JANUARY 26, 1950 Penn State Passers Sock Pittsburgh, 58-5 One of the largest crowds of the season at the Pitt arena saw the Panthers do an about face last night and in the pro cess nearly scare the daylights out of a tall Penn State team which had to turn on the steam in the final minutes• to record a 58 to 51 win In a ding-dong battle right down to tile final moments of the game, the Nittany Lions held only a 49 to 48 edge with two minutes to go before State's dy-, namic Joe Tocci and Jay Mc- Mahan opened the valves. The Lions recorded their eighth win .against four losses and gave Coach Elmer Gross his longest winning streak of the season with' four sticcessive triumphs. NO FREEZE Instead of the freeze they ex hibited against the Lions last Saturday, Pittsburgh pressed State's fast break all night and at half-time were• held to only, a 23 to 20 disadvantage. `Little Joe' turned in his best offensive show of the year, ripp ling for 17 points to pace both clubs. - in scoring. McMahan was right behind the 5-foot 6-inch playmaker with 13 tallies to steal some of Marty Costa's thunder. Costa was held to 8 points. Captain George McCrossin, as expected, led Pitt scoring with five field goals and two free throWs for twelve counters. The Lion Cubs had previously defeated teams from Cornell, 32- 0, and Lehigh, 26-5. Dußois came out on top in matches with the Phillipsburg Independents an d the Clearfield Kiawanis teams. • State piled up a 10-6 lead in the first four weight ‹labsep as Ray Johnson started the .match off by pinning Leroy Larson of Dußois in the 121 class in 1:41 with a cradle and half nelson. Ed Clark lost a decision to Jack Shobert of Dußois, but Lee Smith Pinned Ed Tony of Dußois with a cross body ride in 5:09. By RAY KOEHLER Leads floaters Little Elected Soccer Captain Idol of Penn State soccer fans, All-American Harry Little was elected to captain the 1950 soc cer team at the squad's banquet at Winks Skytop Restaurant last night. The Dover, Pa., scooter this year was runner up in the sc6r ing department to Joe Lane with eight markers. He received na tional acclaim when he scored twice against the University of San Francisco in the nation's first soccer bowl game on New Year's Day at St. Louis, a game that ended in 2-2 tie. Last year he received honor able mention on the booting All- America, this year he garnered a first team. spot. Also at the banquet, 18 varsity letters were presented. Strokes With Pirates Seton Hall's Pirates will do their weekly raiding in Glennland pool tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock, but the Statemen are in no mood to be the victims of any pirating as far as swimming scores are concerned. Fresh from their first victory of the season last weekend over Temple's Owls, the Gutteronmen will attempt to bring their record to the .500 mark. The clash be tween the Blue and Whites will mark the opening of dual meet competition between the two schools. The Pirates surprised most coaches throughout the East last spring by taking second place in the Intercollegiates. Rutgers took• first place honors, with Temple Sigma Pi Drops First IM Game Sigma Pi ran into a snag Tues day night in its drive, to annex laurels in League A when it was handed its first loss by Alpha Chi Sigma, 14-12. , Btit the SP cagers still cling to first place by virtue of their four wins to Alpha Chi Sigma and Delta Chi's three. Delta Chi jumped back into the win column by whitewashing Zeta Beta Tau, 25-0, as Chuck Niskey cut the cords with 11. The other League A contest saw Alpha Zeta top Triangle, 19-9 with Glen Haney getting six points for the winners'. In League B, Jim Hewitt took scoring honors for the evening with 16 points as he led Alpha Phi Alpha to a 33-10 win over Theta Kappa Phi. Phi Kappa Psi grabbed its third straight win by smashing Phi Epsilon Pi, 32-17, while Sigma Phi Sigma downed Tau Phi Delta, 23-10, in the same 'league.
