THURSDAY, JANUARY' 5, 1950 Rec Hall Double Bill To Open Winter Card With vacation a memory, and a long lineup of those famed Rec Hall sports double-headers just around the corner, Penn State's athletes and coaches are grinding back into gear this week, ready for the winter campaigns. • Action begins on the expanse of Nittany hardwood Saturday with Charlie Speidel's wrestlers hosting the matmen of Virginia at 7:30, followed immediately by what should be a top-notch cage clash ' between Elmer ' Gross' Lions and • the Red' Raiders of Colgate. Meanwhile, Sherm Fogg's ski ing team is scheduled to perform at SyracUse against Syracuse and Rensselaer. . • WRESTLERS READY Speidel's grapplers, who stayed in the valley for most of the va cation began working off the rough edges in preparation for their first meet. Virginia will bring an untested squad, but one that has threatening strength in several weights. Speidel's lineup is still jumbled, with many weights unsettled. Fresh ,from their amazing per formance at Raleigh, N.C., where they grabbed off second place in the Dixie .Tourney, the cagers, now boasting four wins' to two losses, will have their hands full with Colgate. The Red Raiders show the same four and two rec ord with wins over St. Lawrence, Toronto U., New York U., and Princeton. Losses were to Co lumbia and Cornell. Colgate is a high-scoring out fit, having dumped a total of 415 points against their oppositions' 368. The Raiders poured 83 mark ers through the hoops against NYU. They'll be up against a tough Penn State zone, however, a zone that limited North Caro lina State, rated one of the top outfits in the South, to 50 points in the Dixie finale. All the winter sports will jump into action within the "Month. Boxing gets the•nod a week from Saturday, on January 14, the same day fencing begins. Swim ming takes over on the" 13th, and . gymnastics on the 28th. Dec. 29—The upstarts from the Keystone State kept on rolling with a 46_41 semi final win over the Moun taineers of West Virginia. Dec. 30—State finally ran out of gas in the champion ship finals and were over hauled by their classy rebel host before a record-shatter ing 11,700 attendance. Gross used only six players in edging past West Virginia in the semi-finals. Previously the Mountaineers had defeated North Carolina's Tarheels, 58-50, to gain the second round. Every player' in the State lineup scored at least four points and Lamie showed the way with 10 counters. Toed and Costa followed with 9 apiece. The Lions committed only six person al fouls. • Lions' Halftime Lead In the showdown it took a con centrated 27-point barrage by the North Carolina State Wolfpack to make up a 23-26 deficit at half time. The .Lions' tight zone bothered the hosts no end until the brilliant Dickey and teammate Ranzino grew hot the second half. Dickey took scoring honors with 14 tallies while Schisler bagged nine for Penn State. THE DAILY . Frisco Leads After a scoreless first period, San Francisco took the lead when Dick Baptista scored midway through the second canto and with that one-point margin the Dons left the field at intermis sion. Jeffrey's halftime advice appar ently took roots and the resuven ated Lions, with Harry Little scoring, knotted it up after seven minutes of play. Seconds befote, Lieb had rifled one toward Goalie Angelo Car massi, one of the greatest goal tenders opposed by State this year; the shot rebounded to Little who drove it through the net. Shortly before the third frame PAGE THREE ended, Baptista again broke through the Lion defense and scored from 20-yards out. And then with their backs to ward the wall, one point behind, an awe-inspired Lion crew took up the challenge. During the last ten minutes of play there was more action in front of the Frisco goal than on Normandy Beach head on D-Day. Shots by Harry Lawroski, Joe Lane, Buss and Ron Coleman were angling toward the Don goal from all angles and di rections.
