JULY 13. 1949 Main Session Loops Begin Tourney Play The Main Session softball league. consisting of three divisions and a total of twenty-three teams. began its schedule last Friday with seven games Seven more games were played Monday evening, while on tap for last evening were Red Valley vs. Delta Upsilon, Big Ten vs. Lambda Chi Alpha, Yahoos vs. Triangle and Phi Kappa Sigma vs. Pi Kappa Alpha. Managers of the teams entered in the league are reminded to report their game scores by the following day to the recreation office, extension 95. Zeta Beta Tau's nine has rack ed up two wins in the early com petition in League C. The ZBT's edged Phi Kappa, 13-12, Friday, and then ran roughshod over the Beaver House, 14-I, Monday. Other scores that have been re ported include Windjammers-32, Old Men-6; Intellectuals-9, Nit tany Co-op-6; Sigma Pi-4, Sig ma Phi Epsilon-3; and Beaver House-13, Alpha Chi Sigma-10. LEAGUE A The roster for League A in cludes the Rockets, Old Men, Nit tany Co-op, Winners, Newman Club, Intellectuals, Windjammers and Reds. Teams listed for play in League B are Red Valley, Big Ten, Yahoos, Phi Kappa Sigma, Pi Kappa Alpha, Triangle, Lam bda Chi Alpha and Delta Upsi lon. Delta Chi, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Zeta Beta Tau, Beaver House, Alpha Chi Sigma, Phi Kappa and Sigma Pi are in League C. The Lions also will enter the IC-4A champion ships at New York City in No vember. Michigan State, IC-4A titlist, was the only team to beat Penn State last year. NEWCOMERS West Chester Teachers Col lege and North Carolina Univer sity are the only newcomers to the 1949 Penn State soccer schedule. Others on the eight game card are Bucknell, Syracuse, Navy, Colgate, Maryland and Temple. Only the Middies de feated the Lions last year in a nine-game schedule. NEW PREXY H. R. Gilbert, graduate manager of Penn State athletics, is the newly-elected president of the Eastern Intercollegiate Golf As sociation. Elected by mail bal lot, he succeeds Rome F. Schwa gel, who withdrew when he re signed as graduate manager of athletics at Georgetown Uni versity. SETS RECORD Horace Ashenfelte-, who owns indoor and outdoor IC-4A marks, set a new Penn State record for the two-mile when he negotiated the distance in 9:03.6 at the Na tional Collegiate championships. The Collegeville ex-GI, who's now abroad with an all-American track team, will return on the campus next Fall for post-grad uate study. GRID FOES Penn State football schedules will be enhanced by new names in forthcoming years. H. R. Gil bert, graduate manager of ath letics, said he's negotiating with several new opponents for future dates. By boosting his total hits foT the season to 111 during the past week, Robinson maintained his .362 average, according to figures including Sunday's games. Next best is Pittsburgh's Ralph Kiner, the home run leader with 23, who is hitting .333. That gives Robinson a 29-point edge.
