FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 1949 Religion-in-Life Week Brinton Reviews Reason, Religion; Moser—Peace "What Can An Intelligent Per son Believe About Religion?" is the topic which Howard H. Brinton will discuss at one of his seminar lectures during the Re ligion-In-Life Week meetings. Dr. Brinton, author of such books as "The Mystic Will," "Di vine Human Society," and many religious articles, received his M. A. at Haverford College and Harvard University and his PhD. at the University of California. He has lec tured in philos ophy and hist ory of religion. A member of Phi Beta Kappa and the Ameri can Philosophi cal Association, Dr. Brinton has been director of Pendle Hill Graduate School for Religion and Social Study in , Wallingford, Pa. since 1936. Other topics which he will dis . cuss during his Sunday morning and Tuesday and Thursday sem , inars are "Science and Re ligion," "The Philosophy of His tory," and "The Power of Love • and the Power of Violence." On Tuesday and Thursday at 4 p.m., Mrs. Paul Moser, who is now speaking and writing on • Amsterdam meeting and Chris tian topics will be guest speaker at the seminars on the subject 'H ow Can the Church Help Pre serve Peace?" Mrs. Moser, who received her B.A. at the University of Kansas, was a leader in YWCA work. civic, state and church organiza tions in Topeka, Kansas. In 1948 she attended the World Council of Churches meeting in Amsterdam and spent six weeks behind the "Iron Curtain." During the two seminar meet ings other topics such as "Chris tian Missions Here and Abroad," "The European Situation," and "The International Feelings of Students" will be discussed. Winston Discusses Life's Aim; Gideon--Courtship, Marriage Mildred E. Winston, who has consented to speak at the Tues day and Thursday seminars at 11 a. in. on the topic "What Shall I Do With My Life?" is the joint author of the book "So You are Going to College." Miss Winston received her BS. at Susquehanna University and her MA (Psychology) at the New York University, A teacher in high school, Miss Winston is on the staff of the Board of Education of the United Lutheran Church in America. She is also active in the National Lutheran Council and Woman's Missionary Society and is adviser of the Lutheran Student Associa -in of America. Miss Winston now working t such capac ies as gu.d ice, promotion, erso nnel and 43 relationships, unmer service rojects and ,ristian Caree r inferences. Other topics of interest during her seminars will ,nclude "The Student's Outlook—National and International," "Displaced Per sons", and "The Student and Higher Education." work in Oriental Languages and Literature at the University of Chicago. He is now at the Mad ison Avenue Temple, Scranton, Pennsylvania. Reverened Oswald Ebert Mr. Elbert, having received his M. A. at Harvard University and his B. D. at Mt. Airy Seminary, Philadelphia studied at the Uni versity of Munich. He attended the First World Conference of Christian Youth in Amsterdam in the National Lu theran Council. Pastor, District Attorney Stress Religious Relations Charles W. Schwantes "What Can An Intelligent Person Believe About Religion?" will be the subject for discussion by Charles W. Schwantes at 4 p.m. on Tuesday. Other topics to be introduced are "Religion and Education," "Religion and Science," and "Human Relationships." Having received his B.D. at the Eden Theological Seminary, Mr. Schwantes did other graduate work at the University of Mis souri and Chicago Theological Seminary. He has been director of Student Work on the Board of Chris tian Education of the Evangelical and Reformed Church since 1946. Mr. Alfred Jackson, Assistant District Attorney of Lycoining County, Williamsport, Pa., has kindly consented to speak at 4 p.m. Monday at the seminar on the topic "Our Present Society and Its Effects on Youth." Mr. Jackson received his Bachelor's Degree at Davidson Col lege, North Carolina and his LL.B. at the University of Pennsylva nia Law School. He is a Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserve and has been especially interested in juvenile delinquency Religion Week Enters Arts, Science Realms The main purpose of Religion-In-Life Week is to help every one realize the importance of "Religion in an Age of Science" and to broaden one's understanding of Arts and Science. Its aim is to try to reach out to those not being influenced by either the Church groups or the Christian Association and to help them to see the relevance of religion to their daily lives. Under the efficient working group, the general committee, composed of students, staff, and faculty representatives fr o m church groups and the Christian Association, as well as represent atives from campus organizaitons, plans for the week have mater ialized into an effective program with a universal message. Guest Leaders Speak Outstanding speakers, such as Howard H. Brinton, author and lecturer, Bruce Gideon, Metho dist Student Pastor at Penn State, and William M. Smith Jr., Associate Professor in the Home of Economics at the College will be present at the daily seminars to act as guest leaders. These leaders for the week will hold periods of individual counsel for students and faculty. ,Such topics as International Relations, War and Peace, and the problems they pose for Chris tians; Brotherhood and Race Re lations; Courtship and Marriage Problems; are a few of the topics which will be discussed at the Religion-In-Life Week meetings. Pastor Scans Race Problem Reverend George M. Houser, author at "Erasing the Color Line" and co-author of the well known pamphlet "We Challenge Jim Crow" will speak on "Broth erhood of Man-A Challenge to the Races" at the Monday and Wednesday meetings at 4 p. m. and also on Wednesday night. During his sophomore yea r at the University of Denver where he received his B. A., Mr. Houser became an exchange student at Lingnan University, Canton, China. He has been an ordained Methodist Mimster since 1943. Mr. Houser was responsible 410* , A setting up interracial workshops to acquaint people further with the non- violent di- rect action ap proach to the race problem. He became the organizer of the Journey of Rec- onciliaton con- ducted in the spring of 1947 in the South through which policies of busses and trains regarding segregation of passengers were tested under the Irene Morgan decision of the Supreme Court. "Problem of Race Relations", "War and Peace" and "War—the Crisis of Our Age" are some of the other topics which will be discussed during these seminars. Mr. Houser is now co-secretary of the Racial-Industrial Depart ment of the Fellowship of Recon ciliation and Executive Secretary of the Congress of Racial Equal ity. YWCA Diredor Speaks On 'Life' At Seminar Miss Helene K. Mosier, Direc tor of the National Student YWCA in Middle Atlantic Re gion for the National Board of the YWCA, has consented to speak at the Tuesday and Thurs day seminars at 11 a.m. on the topic "What Shall I Do With My Life?" She received her Ph.D. at Drew University and took other graduate work at Northwestern University, Columbia University and the University of Minnesota. Miss Mosier was an instructor in Religious Education at Drew University and Director of Re ligious Education at the Brick Presbyterian Church, Rochester, N. Y. Alfred Jackson Youth Worker To Speak At Religion Seminars Ray C. Downs of the McCor mick Theological Seminary in Chicago has consented to speak at the Sunday morning, and Tuesday and Thursday seminars at 11 a. m. His subject will be "What Can An Intelligent Person Believe About Religion?" Other topics will also be discussed at these meetings, such as "Needs in Different Countries", and "Youth in the Church." Mr. Downs has been a travelling fellow of the Presbyterian Board of Chris San Education. He has led youth caravans and work camp groups in Mexico and Europe. Now Director of the Division of Youth Work fo r the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions, Mr. Downs is a candidate for foreign missionary service and expects to be sent to China. Smith, Gideon Lead Seminar "Courtship and Marriage" is the topic for the seminar meet ing on Monday and Wednesday at 4 p.m. which will be presented by William Smith Jr. along with Reverend Bruce Gideon. Having received his M.S. and Ph.D. at Cornell University, Dr. Smith did other graduate work at the Univer sities of Wiscon sin and Chicago '&10 0 s frs He is now As sociate Pro fessor in the the School of Home Econom ic s at Penn State and is pre paring to par ticipate in a five session institute sponsored by the P.T.A. of Erie on "Understanding of the Young Adult."
