Stress Religious Relations
Charles W. Schwantes
"What Can An Intelligent Person Believe About Religion?"
will be the subject for discussion by Charles W. Schwantes at 4
p.m. on Tuesday. Other topics to be introduced are "Religion and
Education," "Religion and Science," and "Human Relationships."
Having received his B.D. at the Eden Theological Seminary,
Mr. Schwantes did other graduate work at the University of Mis
souri and Chicago Theological Seminary.
He has been director of Student Work on the Board of Chris
tian Education of the Evangelical and Reformed Church since 1946.
Mr. Alfred Jackson, Assistant District Attorney of Lycoining
County, Williamsport, Pa., has kindly consented to speak at 4 p.m.
Monday at the seminar on the topic "Our Present Society and Its
Effects on Youth."
Mr. Jackson received his Bachelor's Degree at Davidson Col
lege, North Carolina and his LL.B. at the University of Pennsylva
nia Law School.
He is a Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserve and has
been especially interested in juvenile delinquency
Religion Week Enters
Arts, Science Realms
The main purpose of Religion-In-Life Week is to help every
one realize the importance of "Religion in an Age of Science" and
to broaden one's understanding of Arts and Science. Its aim is to
try to reach out to those not being influenced by either the Church
groups or the Christian Association and to help them to see the
relevance of religion to their
daily lives.
Under the efficient working
group, the general committee,
composed of students, staff, and
faculty representatives fr o m
church groups and the Christian
Association, as well as represent
atives from campus organizaitons,
plans for the week have mater
ialized into an effective program
with a universal message.
Guest Leaders Speak
Outstanding speakers, such as
Howard H. Brinton, author and
lecturer, Bruce Gideon, Metho
dist Student Pastor at Penn
State, and William M. Smith Jr.,
Associate Professor in the Home
of Economics at the College will
be present at the daily seminars
to act as guest leaders. These
leaders for the week will hold
periods of individual counsel for
students and faculty.

Relations, War and Peace, and
the problems they pose for Chris
tians; Brotherhood and Race Re
lations; Courtship and Marriage
Problems; are a few of the topics
which will be discussed at the
Religion-In-Life Week meetings.

Reverend George M. Houser,
author at "Erasing the Color
Line" and co-author of the well
known pamphlet "We Challenge
Jim Crow" will speak on "Broth
erhood of Man-A Challenge to
the Races" at the Monday and
Wednesday meetings at 4 p. m.
and also on Wednesday night.
During his sophomore yea r at
the University of Denver where
he received his B. A., Mr. Houser
became an exchange student at
Lingnan University, Canton,
China. He has been an ordained
Methodist Mimster since 1943.

"War and Peace" and "War—the
Crisis of Our Age" are some of
the other topics which will be
discussed during these seminars.

of the Racial-Industrial Depart
ment of the Fellowship of Recon
ciliation and Executive Secretary
of the Congress of Racial Equal
ity.

speak at the Tuesday and Thurs
day seminars at 11 a.m. on the
topic "What Shall I Do With My
Life?"
She received her Ph.D. at
Drew University and took other
graduate work at Northwestern
University, Columbia University
and the University of Minnesota.

At Religion Seminars
Ray C. Downs of the McCor
mick Theological Seminary in
Chicago has consented to speak
at the Sunday morning, and
Tuesday and Thursday seminars
at 11 a. m. His subject will be
"What Can An Intelligent Person
Believe About Religion?" Other
topics will also be discussed at
these meetings, such as "Needs
in Different Countries", and
"Youth in the Church."
Mr. Downs has been a travelling
fellow of the Presbyterian Board
of Chris San Education. He has
led youth caravans and work
camp groups in Mexico and
Europe.
Now Director of the Division of
Youth Work fo r the Presbyterian
Board of Foreign Missions, Mr.
Downs is a candidate for foreign
missionary service and expects to
be sent to China.
