According to statistics released oday by the National Collegiate athletic Bureau, the Nittany Lions are well on their way to 3Lting a total defensive record. MODERN RECORD The modern total defense rec d is held by Santa Clara, which .eided 69.9 yards per game in 937. Penn State's average total de ,mse now rests at 61.6 yards per ,ame, while the Lions' rushing defense average is 9.1 yards per The Lions dropped from first to third in total offense as a re sult of their muddy encounter with Temple last week, in which Penn State accounted for only 172 yards rushing and no gain in passing. DOWN TO THIRD Detroit went into the lead with an average of 417 yards, followed y Michigan with 406.7, and the ions with 390.6 yards gained on '.otal offense. Penn State dropped to second in rushing offense, after holding the top spot for four weeks, and Detroit took over with an aver age of 319.1 yards. Penn State's average is 312.7 yards, consider ably ahead of third-place Mis souri with an average of 284.5. Unless a major catastrophe happens, the Lions seem a cinch to finish the season in first place in total defense and rushing de fense.
