TUESDAY MORNING, JUDY 15, 1047 The Nittany Lyon Looking over the Penn State spring-summer track season, Joe College can say, “not bad, not bad.” Through the efforts of a couple of guys named Curt Stone and Gerry Karver, Cnick Werner’s skeleton track squad , has chalked up an enviable list of individual titles including one at the NCAA’s at Salt Lake-City. Utah, two from the National AAU’s at Lincoln Neb., and two from the IC-4A’s at Philadelphia. ■ If we include perhaps the most outstand ing runner in the history of Penn State track, the inimitable Barney Ewell, who finished his academic work here this spring at the age of 29 after using up his athletic credits before the war, the total rises somewhat. Barney this season, added the Allegheny Mountain AAU 100-yard dash, and the National AAU 200-meter dash, in addition,do nearly clip ping, a world's record in the 300-yard run. -.The latest •on the Penn State trio which has continued to carve its name on the track records is that Curt Stone, Brooklyn, Pa., ex-GI who 1 has more distance records than he can remember-at one sitting, will go on an exhibition tour to Northern Europe during the sum mer months • ■Karver was invited to make the trip, but he’s decided to stay at home and get married this summer. Ewell also received an .invi tation, but he’ll be practice-teaching near his Lancaster home.' 1 Karver, streamlined blonde miler from Boyertown, really hit his stride ithis spring against Jack : Dianetti, Michigan State pheno menon, at Beaver Field May. 10. Karver over the mile route in 4:11.6, thefastest collegiate' mile since Bobby Ginn of Min nesota ran a 4/11.4 in 1942, and the fastest dual meet mile on record in the country, .. .. .Then the Nittany flash continued to step it off, winning the Coliseum Relay mile against the best in the nation, going on to become the first college boy since Les Mac- Mitchell in 1942 to score a triple win in the three major track engagements of the season. / Karver added the IC-4A outdoor mile (he had won the indoor last winter), the National Collegiate mile, and the National . AAU 1500- meters to his growing siring of laurels. Stone missed his triple killing when he lost to little Jerry Thompson of Texas in the Na tional' Collegiates, but came back 1 to beat the Texas distance ace in the National AAU 5000- meters. ; Stone won his second IC-4A ' outdoor two mile title this spring (he had won his first be fore entering the service). In addition to this,, both Stone and-Karver set new Penn State records.' Stone’s time in the IC-4A’s at Philadelphia, 9:11.2, was the fastest he had ever, run, the best a Penn Stater had ever done, and it topped the Franklin Field record. , Meanwhile, anolher ex-GI who. decided lo turn his hobby of running into something,, continued lo burn up the Penn Stale tracks. Whether it was the mile, the half-mile, or the two-mile; Horace Ashenfelter ran them in his stride,. always bettering his previous time.’ ■?: ■ ! ' ! Ashenfelter’s string of consecutive better times halted at the NCAA’s at Salt Lake City; when he finished sixth in the two-mile which was won by Thompson'in 9:22. Up until that time, Ashenfelter had pared his two-mile time to 9:17. Intramural Soft] LEAGUE I W L Pci.
