CONTESTS TO BEGIN TUESDAY Tpurnaments in Cross Coentry Football, Horseshoes Open Fall Sports Calendar Intramural football, cross-country and horseshoe tournaments will be gni Tuesday. GraUp or individual en tries should register at the Student `Union office on the first floor of Old Main In addition to counting towards the Bezdek pup award, points gained in the tournaments will bring trophies for individuals, as well as organiza tion, which win places. The cross-country event will be run over a course of one and bne-half miles. Only the first three men in an organization team to cross the finish line will bring u the group points, but there may be dram three,, to seven entries from one group m the race. Two-man teams, either fraternity or non-fraternity, will compete in the horseshoe pitching contest. Orgam iations will. be allowed - to enter any number of teams, signing up at the Student Union office, with Dean. Hugo Hezdek, or at the Theta Chi house. Entrance fees for the football and cross-country tournaments mull be $lOO for each team, while the horse shoe contest will require a deposit of $ 60 for each team entered. CERAMICS SOCIETY SELECTS OFFICERS OF COMING YEAR At a meeting of the,Ceramics so ciety on Tuesday evening,• officers were elected for this year. They are Roy S. Maize '32, president; Harold R. Custer '33, vice president; Ronald E Griffiths '33, secretary; and Mel vin A Forsyth treasurer. Plans for the year were discussed' and Prof John B Shaw, head of the ceramics department, gave a talk on the purpose of the society for the, benefit of the new members. Murphy as assistant pro fessor of economic geography. Geography has received little at tention at 'erin'State except in Sum mer Session up to the present time At a number of the foremost univer sities it is a popular subject command ing a large enrollment. Dr. Murphy will be the first full-time geographer engaged here. The program of courses will be in accord with the modern view that geography involves a description of the etfitural (man-made) and natural fea tures of the landscape, pointing out their inter-relationships. ME PENN STATE COLLEGIAN First State Student Resides in Arkansas On a little farm near Fayetteville, Arkansas, Penn State's first student is now living. Dr. James Stinson Read, a retired physician, bears the distinction of be ing the first' student to enroll in the first agiicultural school in the count ry.
