TO BEGIN TUESDAY
Tpurnaments in Cross Coentry
Football, Horseshoes Open
Fall Sports Calendar
Intramural football, cross-country
and horseshoe tournaments will be
gni Tuesday. GraUp or individual en
tries should register at the Student
`Union office on the first floor of
Old Main
In addition to counting towards the
Bezdek pup award, points gained in
the tournaments will bring trophies
for individuals, as well as organiza
tion, which win places.
The cross-country event will be run
over a course of one and bne-half
miles. Only the first three men in
an organization team to cross the
finish line will bring u the group
points, but there may be dram three,,
to seven entries from one group m
the race.
Two-man teams, either fraternity
or non-fraternity, will compete in the
horseshoe pitching contest. Orgam
iations will. be allowed - to enter any
number of teams, signing up at the
Student Union office, with Dean. Hugo
Hezdek, or at the Theta Chi house.
Entrance fees for the football and
cross-country tournaments mull be
$lOO for each team, while the horse
shoe contest will require a deposit of
$ 60 for each team entered.
CERAMICS SOCIETY SELECTS
OFFICERS OF COMING YEAR
At a meeting of the,Ceramics so
ciety on Tuesday evening,• officers
were elected for this year. They are
Roy S. Maize '32, president; Harold
R. Custer '33, vice president; Ronald
E Griffiths '33, secretary; and Mel
vin A Forsyth treasurer.
Plans for the year were discussed'
and Prof John B Shaw, head of the
ceramics department, gave a talk on
the purpose of the society for the,
benefit of the new members. Pro
fessor Shaw outlined plans for tech
nical work which is to be carried on
by the society during the year.

With a view to - satisfying an in
creased demand for courses in grog
realm Prof. Chesleigh A Ermine,
head of the geology department, an
nounces the appointment of Dr. Ray
mond E. Murphy as assistant pro
fessor of economic geography.
Geography has received little at
tention at 'erin'State except in Sum
mer Session up to the present time
At a number of the foremost univer
sities it is a popular subject command
ing a large enrollment. Dr. Murphy
will be the first full-time geographer
engaged here.
The program of courses will be in
accord with the modern view that
geography involves a description of the
etfitural (man-made) and natural fea
tures of the landscape, pointing out
their inter-relationships.
Courses of study to be offered will
include introduction to geography,
world geography, economic geography,
climatology, physiography, geography
of North America, geography of South
America, geography of Europe, geog
why of Asia,—geographY of Penn
sylvania, field methods in geography,
agricultural geography, and historical
geography 9f the United States
Dr. 'Murphy was graduated in min
ing engineering from the Missouri
School of Miiies in 023 and received
an M. S. degree in geology and a Ph.
D. degree in economic geography at
the University of Wisconsin last year
He was head Of the geology and
geography department at Concord
State Teachers College, Athens, West
Virginia, and taught various geog
raphy courses at the University of
Kentucky, University of Wisconsin,
Eau Claire State Teachers College at
Eau, IVlscopsin,, and West Virginia
University.

with the depratment of agricultural
economics in a study of the fine sheep
wool industry, under the direction of

ject, which was begun early last
week, will continua until October 21.

Two engine lathes have been do
nated to the department of mechan
ical engineering by the United States
Navy. These will enable the depart-
ment to provide better thesis work foe
naval officers enrolled in the College,
'according to Prof. Harold A. Eserett,
bead of the department.

First State Student
Resides in Arkansas
On a little farm near Fayetteville,
Arkansas, Penn State's first student
is now living.
Dr. James Stinson Read, a retired
physician, bears the distinction of be
ing the first' student to enroll in the
first agiicultural school in the count
ry. Ip 1857 he entered is hat was then
the Farmers' High School and con
tinued his studies here, serving in the
meantime as assistant to Superintend
ent Waring and President Pugh, until
his enlistment into military service at
the outbreak of the Civil Woo.
Despite his advanced age, Doctor
Read has always taken a hig interest
in his "Alma hinter" and is a regular
reader of the Alannn News He
Paid his last visit here at an Alumni
reunion during Commencement week
in 1913. At this time, he met H R
Rosen 'l3, who in head of the depart
ment of plant pathology and pathol
ogist of the experiment station of the
Uno,ersity of Arkansas, and the too
are now good friends.
