I feel that if we all could realize how much the apparently insignifi cant little injuries resulting from drivi hg nails and tacks into trees shorten the life of our campus trees, that all would feel the necessity of protecting them. The big willow across the drive from the Armory has begun to decline largely because of the innumerable tacks which hal-e been driven into its trunk, each of which has made a fresh wound in the living tissue and has made it pos sible for spores of destructive fungi to enter the wound. Its life is being shortened by many years through this mistreatment. A great deal of credit is due to those who have planned and carried out the planting of our beautiful campus. We show little respect for them or for the beauty of the college or the ideals for which State stands when we thoughtlessly injure and thus hasten the end of our trees. I ask the help of every student in preventing our trees from being made bulletin boards and hitching posts. Ask yourselves if the trees do not mean more to you than you have perhaps realized. Hugh P.
