The Westinghouse Air Brake Co. has presented to the Depart
ment of Mechanical Engineering complete air brake equipments
for a locomotive and car.
An econometer, an instrument which measures the percentage
of carbonic acid gas in the smoke from the boilers, has been at
tached to the smoke-stack of the boiler house. It has commer
cial value in regulating the air supply to the fire and is a valuable
addition to the mechanical laboratory equipment.
Most of the materials have arrived for the hydraulic labora
tory in the basement of the Engineering Building, and will
probably be installed during this session or the winter holidays.
The Mechanical Engineering Department has received blue
prints of all hydraulic appliances used on U. S. steamships. This
gift is due to kindness of Engineer-in-Chief Melville, of U. S.
The so-called roo light storage battery, which has been re
cently received by the Electrical Engineering Department, is be
ing installed in the Electro-metallurgical Laboratory. Mr. Chas.
Harris, 'of, deserves much credit for his aid in the procurement
of this valuable piece of equipment.
A handsome new Whitney alternating ammeter 'has been re
ceived by the Department of Electrical Engineering within the
past few days.
The arrangement of mathematical subjects for the Chemistry,
Biology, and Latin Science Courses, has been changed so as to
adapt the instruction to the especial needs of students of those
departments. More time is now assigned to algebra, less to
spherical trigonometry, and a mathematical seminary on the
fundamental units of science is given two hours .a week by Pro
Prof. and Mrs. Watson have returned from their European
trip, having been gone since May. While abroad Prof. Watson
was studying the live stock interests of the countries he visited.
Dr. Runkle, who held, last year, a fellowship in Psychology at
Clark University and was absent from December till June, has re
turned and was appointed full Professor of Psychology and
Ethics at this institution.
