Dr. M. E. McDonnell, who ha - s been in Europe on leave of ab
sence for the past fifteen months, has returned. Dr. McDonnell
has been appointed Assistant Bacteriologist of the Station.
Prof. Carl Becker, B. A., a graduate of the University of Wis
consin, of the class of '96, has been appointed Instructor of His
tory and Political Science at this College. Mr. Becker has held
fellowships, since graduation, at University of Wisconsin and
The new instructor in Mathematics, Mr. Norman C. Riggs, who
takes the classroom work of Dr. Benedict, is a native of Missouri
and a graduate of the University of Missouri in the class of 1895.
He spent two years as instructor, one as acting assistant professor
of Mathematics in that institution. He spent two years in the
Graduate School of Harvard devoting his time to the study of
Mathematics, and received the degree of Master Science there.
Prof. Bocher, of Harvard, selected Mr. Riggs to read his papers
Prof. G. C. Butz, Horticulturist of the Station, has been re
cently appointed by the State Department of Agriculture one of
the three inspectors of nursery stock in the state.
Drs. Armsby and Frear attended the meeting of the American
Association of Agricultural Colleges and Experiment Stations,
and of Official Agricultural Chemists held in San Francisco dur
ing July. Dr. Armsby is retiring president of the Association, and
Dr. Frear retiring chairman of committee of Official Chemists on
The new Station building, for the reception of the respiration
calorimeter, which is to be built and operated by the station in co
operation with the U. S. Department of Agriculture, is rapidly
The Station has received requests from Prof. Hagemann, of
Bonn, Germany, and from Prof. Tangl, of Buda Pesth, Austria,
for plans of the respiration-calorimeter, now in process of con
struction, and the duplication of the apparatus at both of these
places is under consideration.
The Dairy School is contemplating the addition of the necessary
apparatus for the manufacture of dried curd. This is a bye-prod
uct of skim milk and is used largely in the manufacture of paper.
