166 THE RELATION Or ATHLETICS TO THE COLLEGE plan by which an Alumni Scholarship can be maintained for the benefit of some worthy student and to incidentally render a ser vice to the College. THE RELATION OF ATHLETICS TO THE COLLEGE. THE fact that there are fewer students at The Pennsylvania State College this fall than were registered during the past year is not to be wondered at when it is considered that many who might possibly have intended entering . the institution were prevented from doing so on account of the military service they had engaged to render the federal government at the out break of the Hispano-American war. We assign such a reason as one of the causes for the falling off in the student roster from personal knowledge of several cases that have come to our notice in this section. But other conditions than the war have doubt less had their effect, as well. The general depression in busi ness, making it necessary for many parents to curtail expenses by denying their sons and daughters the advantage of an early start in the acquirement of a college education, has had its effect on every institution of learning in the country. But these unto ward influences are only transient and we look into the past and wonder why State has never been able to get beyond the four hundred mark. Space is too valuable in this issue for us to consume any of it in exploiting the natural advantages and superior equipment of The Pennsylvania State College as forces that ought to attract a large student body, so let us turn our attention to the reason for its scarcely outstripping the Normal schools and large academies in point of attendance. Here is an institution with an ideal local tion, an exceptional corps of instructors, a technical standing Guo. C. BUTZ, 'B3, Sec'y and Treas.
