1898.] Great lengths of the tri-colored bunting were swung from center to end and from side to center it was caught up in loops and hung free in streamers. National flags covered the cannon and the walls were draped with them. Around the room wire hung the various class flags and pennants and banners of victory. The stage was a mass of palms, concealing the refreshments, while up above this tropical screen was spelled in light the words, ' Wel come Home." The guests began to arrive about eight o'clock and they were received by Dr. and Mrs. Atherton, assisted by Vice President and Mrs. Buckhout and by Dr. Colfelt, who had taken their posi tion to the right of the entrance. As the classes filed past the members were announced by their respective presidents. After the ceremony of receiving had been concluded Vice President Buckhout addressed the guests from a platform which had been erected on the left of the armory, introducing Dr. Colfelt as the speaker of the evening. He spoke as only Dr. Colfelt can, and in the heartiest and most whole-souled manner thrice welcomed Dr. Atherton home. Dr. Atherton arose amidst great applause and responded by words which were expressive of his great pleasure at seeing State College again and of his thankfulness for returned health, and of his admiration for the conduct of the students. Dancing occupied the remainder of the evening, but during the intermission entertainment was not lacking, for Mr. Wenzel sang and the Mandolin Club played several of its best pieces. A large number of invited guests were present, 'a special train having been provided for those coming from Bellefonte. Every body did his best to make the affair an enjoyable one and the returned president appeared to be " thrice welcome." An enthusiastic audience greeted the first appearance of the Thespians in " The Rivals" Saturday evening, February igth. Great ingenuity and enterprise was shown by the manager, Mr. Sprecher, assisted by Mr. Albert, in converting the College chapel into a play-house.
