1896.] this year: The Indians scored 24 points before State got the ball, the final score standing 48 to 5. SOPHOMORES x6—FRESHMEN o. The annual Freshman-Sophomore foot ball game was played, or rather begun, Saturday, December 5. The day was perfect and both teams played hard. Everyone was expecting the usual overwhelming defeat of the Freshmen, but 'oo surprised them by showing the pluckiest game ever played on Beaver field by Fresh men. The Sophomore team was slightly heavier, but 'oo gave evidence of more careful practice and held them clown to a tied score, an unprecedented event since the abandonment of cane rushes. The result, 4-4, decided nothing, and a second challenge was issued and accepted. Game number two was called Wednesday, the 9th, at 3:45 P. M. Rain lid softened the field, so that it was nearly as muddy as two years ago, but this did not prevent the two teams from playing fully as good a game as the first. They played as evenly as before, and the result was another tie, o—o. After time was called a conference was held between the teams, and it was decided to play another " half " of fifteen, minutes, and if this was undecisive to leave the matter to arbitration to de termine if the Freshmen had earned the right to carry canes. But arbitration was not necessary. Two minutes after the ball was put in play Lockwood carried it across the line for a touch down; Hayes kicked the goal, and then, in quick succession, he kicked two field goals, and when the deciding extra half was over '99 counted up 16 points to the Freshmen's o.
