field sports, running, jumping, hurdle races, hammer throwing, putting the shot, tug of war teams, and numerous other vigorous and healthy sports ; then there will be a better return for the time and money expended. Now that the time has come when field sports must necessarily be sus pended for several months, let there be a move made toward making a track next spring. The authorities are ready to aid us when we are ready. With a good track, we shall not have much trouble in getting a large number of students interested in more out door sports. sis Hi ' :|i WHEN about a year ago the trustees granted us the privilege of giving assemblies eash term, it was expected that the tone of the society here would be given an impetus which would create a more lively feeling among us, and go far toward alleviating many of the effects which naturally come to a body of students situated as we are, so remote from the influences of the progressive society of our large towns and cities. This has been realized we believe, quite generally ; but there is opportunity for much more interest to be taken. To those who have conscientious scruples against dancing we would say: By no means allow yourselves to take part in that which you think you cannot do without sacrificing principle; but to those who think that the assemblies have an THE FREE LANCE. elevating influence, we say: By all means let no opportunities pass which you re ally feel can improve you socially or otherwise. If you cannot dance, you may never have a better opportunity for learning. Although our military uniforms are not full dress, they are not worn gener ally, and present always a neat appear ance. If by general consent they would be worn by all on these occasions, many who now stay away because they wrong ly think that full dress suits are requir ed, would be relieved of what they may think to be an embarrassment. We are sure that uniforms would not be dis tasteful to our friends from a distance, and why should they be to us, were it not for a misguiding sense of pride ? As these things involve the success of our entertainments, it would seem pro per to so arrange matters in the future that the greatest number possible can cheerfully take part. THE action of the Faculty granting to the students .Friday following Thanksgiving as a holiday is highly commendable, and one much appreciat ed by all. That it was a wise action nobody can deny who is acquainted with the circumstances. It was more of a benefit than a loss to the students, and was particularly advantageous to the Senior class inasmuch as the day was needed by them in their preparation for the first Senior hop of the year, to be
