IT is very apparent that a more lively interest has been taken in military affairs this year than ever before by the under instructors. It speaks well for the military department. The battalion is larger than ever before and farther advanced, for this season of the year. Should this competitive interest of the instructors continue—of which there is STATE COLLEGE, PA., DECEMBER, 1890. EDITOR, every indication—the battallion promises by spring to be one of which we may well feel proud. The withholding of the promotions of the non-commissioned officers until they have first shown their ability as instruc tors over new cadets, seems to work well. THE need of a better and more ex tended ground for field sports and gamesiseasilyseen. The interest shown in sports, and the generous support given by the students in the interest of foot ball and base ball, deserve a better recompense than what it gets. It is al most discouraging to be continually contributing toward games of which they are seldom witnesses. And yet it is no fault of management, but of location, that this occurs. When the foot ball season is here all their energies are directed towards foot ball ; when the base ball season comes all energies are turned towards base ball.
