LETTER BOX Lancaster, Pa., Oct. 20, 1789. Editors Free Lance: Franklin and Marshall commenced the 103rd year of her existence under the most auspicious circumstances. The prospects for the coming year are very encouraging. The total number of students in attendance is two hundred. It is with regret that we part with Dr. Apple, who, for twelve years, has been our honored President. A worthy successor, however, has been found in the person of Dr. John S. Stahr, Professor of Natural Science. Dr. Apple now devotes his whole time to teaching in the Theological Seminary. Many improvement to the building and about the campus were made during the summer. The college library has been reno vated under the direction of Prof. Keiffer. The several libraries now contain about 25,- 000 volumes, and additions are being made constantly to this number. The Linnman Society, of this city, has presented its valuable collection of botani cal and geological specimens to the college. Mrs. James M. Hood, of Frederick, Md., to whose munificence the college owes the Daniel Scholl Observatory, has added to her former gifts the donation of $5,000 for addi tional apparatus for the observatory. Foot ball is now absorbing the attention of the students. A strong team has been or ganized and under the training of Captain Irvine, for five years a player on the Prince ton team, promises to make a fair showing. Games have been arranged with Millersville THE FREE LANCE. State Normal, Bucknell, ITaverford, Dickin- son and Swarthmore, The glee club is practicing every evening in preparation for its tour at the holidays. The orchestra is also working faithfully. The special classes in French, Biology and Astronomy have been continued. A class in Organic Chemistry has been started. L/E^TURE}. Hon. B. K.
