Lancaster, Pa., Oct. 20, 1789.
Editors Free Lance:
Franklin and Marshall commenced the
103rd year of her existence under the most
auspicious circumstances. The prospects
for the coming year are very encouraging.
The total number of students in attendance
is two hundred. It is with regret that we
part with Dr. Apple, who, for twelve years,
has been our honored President. A worthy
successor, however, has been found in the
person of Dr. John S. Stahr, Professor of
Natural Science. Dr. Apple now devotes
his whole time to teaching in the Theological
Seminary.
Many improvement to the building and
about the campus were made during the
summer. The college library has been reno
vated under the direction of Prof. Keiffer.
The several libraries now contain about 25,-
000 volumes, and additions are being made
constantly to this number.
The Linnman Society, of this city, has
presented its valuable collection of botani
cal and geological specimens to the college.
Mrs. James M. Hood, of Frederick, Md., to
whose munificence the college owes the
Daniel Scholl Observatory, has added to her
former gifts the donation of $5,000 for addi
tional apparatus for the observatory.
Foot ball is now absorbing the attention of
the students. A strong team has been or
ganized and under the training of Captain
Irvine, for five years a player on the Prince
ton team, promises to make a fair showing.
Games have been arranged with Millersville
