PXKSONNXL OF THE NEW YORK PRESS James Gordon Bennett is sole owner of th .-Herald.- The Tribune is owned by stockholders, of whom Dr. J. C- Ayer, of Lowell, js the heaviest. Samnel binclair, the publisher, is also one of the largest owners, while Stephen T. Clark, the wn ter of the money articles, and Horace Greely, are interested to a large amount. Xtte capital stock is SSUU.UUU. The or ganization of the Tribune editorial staff is as follows: The editor-in-chief is Horace Greely. Sidney Howard Gay is the man aging editor the executive head of the concern: lloderick Urane is the news editor. J. II. Hasser is the night editor, and I. N. Browne the city editor. The financial department is under the charge of 8. T.;darke. Solon Robinson edits tb.6 department of agriculture. George Ripley, atone time one of the most elo quent of preachers in Boston, is the lit erary editor. "William Winter is the theological, Henry C. "Watson the musi cal, and Clarence Cook the art editor. The corps of editorial writers embraces such names as Cougdon, Smalley, Young, and "Wilkinson. A. J. Cummings edits the weekly. Myron Fox reads all copy to prevent repetition in the paper, and D. K. O'Connell keeps the index. In addition, the Tribune has a corps of fifteen reporters, second to none in the land. The principal owners of the Times are Leonard W. Jerome, James B. Taylor, Henry J. Raymond, George Jones, the publisher, and Christopher Morgan, of Methodist fame. During Mr. Raymond's absence, Thurlow Weed and F. J. Otter son are managing editors. The World is conducted by Manton Marble, who is the largest owner in the concern. Of the younger journalists, there are several of great promise ; omong them arc Thomas A. Kennctt, of the World, Daniel K. O'Donaell, of the Tribune, and Augustus Maverick, of the Evening Post. The best editorial writers, and each inimitable in his way, are George Wilkes, of the Spirit of the Timet, Sidney Howard Gay and Charles T. Congdon, of the Tribune, Win. H. Hurlburt, of the World, and Charles Nordhoff, of the Evening Post. The best American political statistician living, con nected with the press, is probably Horace Greely; the next beat is Franklin J. Ot 'er son, of the Times, though Thomas G. Shearman, a lawyer, is a perfect cyclope dia of political knowledge, and is a very useful man for more than one newspaper establishment. Ihe JSation has a sub scription of over seven thousand, while the Round Table is holding its own in spite of the bitter criticisms it gives and receives. The Independent rolls up the overwhelming list of 60,000 subscribers, and the number is daily increasing. Remarkable Tenacity of Life. The Shirleysburg Herald relates tho fol lowing story, vouching for its correctness About the first of January last, Joshua Morgan, of Cromwell township, Hunting don county, thrashed a quantity of grain and threw the 6traw on a pile in the barnyard. About the same time, a good sized sow, weighing about two hundred pounds, mysteriously disappeared, and no trace ot her could be Found. A few days ago, the straw was removed, and the sow was found underneath, standing erect, and still alive, though wasted away to a ekele ton. She was about six feet from the surface of the pile in tho nearest direc tion, and had worked a small cavity in the straw around her. She had been thus buried four months, less' four days. At last account she was doing well, and was expected to recover. ANIO , ARR ANGEMENTS I SUGAR KETTLK3, 10 to 40 gallons. COPPER KETTLES, 3 quarts to 40 gallons. TINWARE, all Borts and kinds.
