'That wad a hint for you to buy the etockinns, said Dick. "No, you're out," sail Growling. "She knew that I was as poor &a herself : but though she could not rely on lay purse, she had every confidence iu my taste and judgment, and consulted me ca a plan she formed for going to the A in proper twi. Now, what do.ycu think it was t "To co in cotton, I suppose," returned Dick. "Out oain, sir you'd never guess it ; and only a woman could have hit upou the expedient. It waa the fashion in tnose days for ladies in full dress to wear pink gtockinss, and she proposed paiuting her legs V " "Painting her legs !" they all exclaim ed. "Fact, sir," said the doctor, "and she relied upon me for telling her if the cheat was successful.'' "And was if ?" asked Durfy. "Don't be ia a hurry, Tom. I com plied ou. one condition, namely, that I ehould be the painter." "Oh, vou old rascal," said Dick. "A capital bargain," said Durfy "Dut not a attorney. "Don't interurt m safe covenant," added the said gentlemen, the doctor. "I got some roso pink, ac cordingly, and I defy all the hosiers in Nottingham to make a tighter fit than I did on little Jenny ; and a prettier pair of Etoekings I never saw." "And she went to the ball ?" said Dick. "She did." "And the trick succeeded 7" inquired Durfy. "So completely," sail the doctor, "that several lauies asked her to recommend her dyer to them. So. you see what, a woman will do to go to a dance. Poor little Jen ny ! she was a merry minx by-the-by, 6he boxed my ears that night for a joke I made about the stockings. 'Jenny,' said I, 'for fear your stockings should full down when you are dancing, hadu't you better Jet me paint a pair of garters on them ?' " "rt'iio Makes Your. Draxdy ? In view of some developments recently made iu a trial before the U. S. Circuit Court at Albany, this becomes an jmportaut query with brandy di inkers. One Mr. Morris hed been selling manufactured brandy in large quantities throughout the country. Several casks of it were seized ia Plattsburg, supposed to be foreign liquor. The United States officer held it, and Morris sued for his property. Iu order to show that it was not a foreigu article, he was obliged to prove it of home manufacture. This was done by placing on the stand Mr. George- Dayton, of the firm of Daytcn & Co., rectifiers and deal ers in liquors iu New York city, who tes tified that he was engaged in manufactu ring imitation brandy, and that he had sold to Morris from three to five hundred casks of the tame. This brandy is made from neutral and cologne spirits, flavored with oil ot cogniac. Griffiu, a" cooper, vas called to show that he had manufac tured the imitation French brandy cables for Dayton and others. No part of the material but the willow is imported. Jle testified that they put dates on the casks eight, ten, and fifteen years hack. There are four or five of the same kind of estab lishments in New York and Erooklyn. He made over ten thousand of the imita tion casks for Dayton in a year, "Several parties who pretended to be judges of the pure brandy tasted of both the pure and the imitation article in open Couit, and were obliged to acknowledge that they were unablo to tell "tother ircm which." Let brandy drinkers take notice ! Tit for Tat. A lady riding in one of the suburban stages the other diy politely asked a passenger who had got in to lay aside his cigar. The passenger took no notice of the request, whereupon the lady very coolly leaned over, and snatching the cigar from his mouth, threw it inio the road. With equal snnj fruul the smoker stretched out his hand, aud seizing a poo dle which was in his fair assailant's lap, flung it out oi (he carriage. "Turn about is fair play, Madame." the fellow pro vokingly added as he adjusted himself in his corner. . NIC ARRANGEMENTS! SUGAR KETTLfcS, 10 io 40 gallons. COPPER KETTLES, 3 quarts to -10 gallons.
