JU Arrest ofGca. C. i'. Sloae. Occasion!," -" Philadelphia thus uotictfs the u-ibbiuj of a suspected traitor : The arrest of Bridal", or General C. P. Prone on StfurJiy night, and" his transor i i Fort Lifajerfe, not unexpected by i nose who had known 'as strong secession r-roc'ivi?.ie. ilia conduct in the battle of Ja!U UluST. which resulted in the inh ere of the- jratlant Ralcr aad Lis heroic band, aul the wanner iu which he ;tt ismprtvi to brov.-beat Senator Sum nor fbr rriciei-iintr his military i elicy in the .Sen ate, would, I think, lave Led to his almost i I unanimous rejection had he not been pie- j vioasly confirmed, at tne cancl ton, for ths cruce of brigaiier general. The immediate car.se of his arrest has not been j published, but it, of course, grew out of liis well-known opinions aed expro-ion. j The fact is, there are too many of the of ficers., particularly' of the regular truiy. j who, while ILjhtinir against the rebels, eb j not hesitate to iudub.ro in certain ox pre- sidns of conditional and qualified patriot- iriiu. This class is c Tin posed" of those who ! have had intimate association with South- j orn society, and are well inoculated w.th j the heresy of State ftihts. They talk flippantly against Abolitionists anJ luac-ic Republicans, and arc particularly addicted to complimenting the rebel leaders. They forget the great issues involved in this contest, and unconsciously ignore their own duty iu the premises. Happily, however, they are in a minority, even in the regular army. Rut if it were not for the bravo and unmurmuring men taken from private life, and clothed with the confidence and commissions of the Gov eminent, even the example of this minor ity could not be otherwise than injurious. The sympathizers with Secession in pri vate life have been greatly assisted and encouraged b- the example of half-hearted officers of the regular army, and it was high time for Secretary Stanton to give them such an admonition as will, not litil to be effective. If ever there was a good cause, it is that in which the Amer ican arm v is now engaged. The blesaingi for which we "are contending are beyond all parallel and 'price, and the foes we are fighting have been guilty of every crime iu the calendar. VSr the mau who wears the American uniform to hesitate, for out Mel c or political reasons, and to chop logic as to what he will or will not do, is inon htrous. 1 know of no spectacle more dis creditable than to hear an officer say that he has taken up his sword simply in the discharge of a cold duty, and that he will not be bound by the opinions of the Ad ministration. All such meu are compul sory patriots, aud deserve to be watched and distrusted." What is needed in this struggle is a hearty, zealous, even fanat ical devotion to the country. The spirit of the Crusades should be invoked against the rebellion. The American people are ontending equally for the. existence of their - own Government and for human liberty everywhere. Every day increases the magnitude aud the obligations of their destiny. And the military man who does not feel the inspiring lbree of this great truth should at once resign, lie need not hope that others will follow his lead, livery such loss will be compensa ted by new volunteers. Fortunately for the future fortunately for our rights and our race, the Administration has resolved to tolerate no man who is not entirely and heartily enlisted, for weal or .woe, on . the side of the Americau Union. The '-Stuono 1a.." Dr. Winihhip, the famous ''strong man," contributed an article to the 2. i.
