J - m ' ', " ti Si ! " n ; , I) i1 Denominational Oxen. Texas, says the True Witness, is a great State. It has cot only a large, growing, mixed popula tion every variety of climato and soil, game and stock but its very oxen bare become denominational, if not sectarian in name, character and spirit. In prouf of this we crive the following incident: A minister travelling along the road, met a stranger driving his wagon, which was pulled by four oxen ; as the minister approached, "he heard him say, "Get up, Presbyterian "Gee, Cauipbcllite I" "Haw, Baptist!" "What are you doing, Methodist I" The minister, struck with Ihe singularity of such uauies being given to oxen, remarked : Stranger, you have strange names for your oxen, and I wi?h to know why they had such names given them. The driver replied, "I cull that lead ox in front 'Presbyterian' because he is true blue and never fails he believe? in pulling through every difficult place, persevering to the end, and then he knows more than all the rest. The one by his side I call 'Catnpbellite ;' he does very well when you let him go his own way, until he sees water, and then all the world could not keep him out of it, and there he stands as if his journey was en Jed. This off ox, behind, is a real 'Baptist," for he is all the time after water, and will not cat with the others, but is constantly looking, first on one side, and then on the other, and at everything that conies near him. The other, which I call 'Methodist,' makes a great noise and a great to do, and you would think that he was pulling all crea tion, and he don't pull one pound." 'ihe minister having had his curiosity gratified with the explanation, rode on, wondering what he should next see and hear in Texas. Pleasure for a Ciiild. Blessed be the hand that prepares a pleasure fur a child, for there is uo saying when and where it may bloom forth. Does not al most everybody rcmeuibcr some kind hearted man who showed him a kindness in the day of his childhood ? The writer of this recollects himself at this moment a bare-footed lad, stauding at the wooden fence of a poor little garden in his native village; with longing eyes he gazed on the flowers which were blooming there quietly in the brightness of a Sunday morning. The possessor came from his little cottage; he was a wood cutter by trade, and spent the whole week at work in the woods. He had come into the garden to gather flowers to stick in his coat when he went to church. lie saw the boy, and breaking off the most beau tiful of his carnations, which was streaked with red ana white, he gave it to him. Neither the giver nor the receiver said a woid, and with bounding steps the boy ran home ; and now, here at a distance from that home, after so many events of so many years, the feeling of gratitude which atritated the breast of that Lav, ex presses itself on papt-r. The carnation has long since withered. bu; it now blooms afro-sh. Dtujlas JerroLI. Anecdote of -i if e Bkvolution. Col. TV". "William's, a delegate in Congress from Connecticut, after having signed the Dec laration of Independence, said to one of his companions: "If we are defeated in oar struggle for Independence, this day's work iviil make bad work for me. I have held a commis sion in the rebel army; I have written for rebel newspapers ; I am the son-in-law of a rebel Governor, and now I affix my name to this rebel declaration. My sins are too great to be pardoned by our royal master; I must then be hanged." The other gentleman answered : "I believe my case is not so desperate; fori have had no connection with thcurmv nor can it be proved that heretofore I have written or done anything obnoxious to the ! mother country." j Ihe immediate and prompt repl- was, "Then, sir, you deserve to be hanged!" SST Dr. Johnson made a large hole and a small one in the door of his room for his two cats. "What have you two holes for ?" asked a friend. "Why, the large is for the largo cat, and the small one is for the small cat." "Why, one hole would have done for both." "Ah ! would it ? how is the big cat to get throu-rh the little hole?" asked the astute Doctor. "She can't. But the little cat can get through the large hole." "Egad ! I never thought of that." Everyday Exaggeration. "I am tired to death." So von havo said c?ton and are alive still, and in good health too. ! "I have not had a wink of sleep all! night." And yet your bed-fellow beard you sr.nrc several times. "I would not do it for the world." And yet you have done many things equally as well for a penny. 4We were up to our knees in mud."
