tf 1 i 4 FORTHEFARMER. Interesting Facts for Farmers. We take frora a long article by a Cor respondent in the New England Farmer, the following extract, which wo are sure will bo perused with interest by our ag ricultural readers : Every practical, observing tiller of the Boil well understands that no ruano, supcr- phospate or other nitrogenous or highly niureimai 1:1 uiuiuj, van itswrc lo Hie foil the lost carbon, which has supplied a Buccession of crops, with the essential ma terials which enter into the fourteen ele inents oi grain, htiit and grass, lhotrue principle of agricultural scierice introduces another system, natural, plain and alto gether dissimilar. The forest must give up her stores of carbon, (and she manu factures a large surplus annually,) so nicely elaborated by nature s laws as tolls fts ammonia, and yet fitted for a powerful absorbent of lifiuid manures, with pjwer to . resist decomposition until brought in contact with the roots of plants. The swamps must yield up their store of veg etable wealth, the rich inorgauic materials of surrouuding hills and forests, to reunite with the mineral salts too firmly fixed in the soil to be washed away by the annual rains. The orgauic laws of the universe established by the Creator, for the gov ernment of all the changes and formal conditions of properties of matter, whether in a crude mineral, organized or detached condition, are as uniform and unerring as the physical laws that govern the rising and setting of the sun. As the demand for carbon to form fat, muscle, cellular tissue, bone, brain, hair and other por tions of the human body, and at the same time keep up an animal heat of 98 night and day, is very great, we readily see why gtarch is so a"buudant in all plants used as food for man or beast. Starch contains a iarge amount of carbon, and the forests and swamps of the old States arc holding the, great Uilk of carbon in store, to-day. We must increase the productiveness of rural labor by introducing into the pres ent mode of farming more system in the science of vegetable physiology. Kvery one knows that new laud, land never subjected to cultivation, will pro- I dace in abundance all the crops which that couatry or district is susceptible of pro ducing. Hence we are advised that the ! ioiests and swamps of any hilly country j comes to our aid, and teaches us how to change a cold subsoil into a warm, pliable, productive, surface soil, l'ractical expe rience has taught us that a good soil which produces 100 pounds of ripe wheat plants, loses but 15 pounds of its weight and sub stance by the operation, 85 pounds coming froui the atmosphere. Science reveals to us why it is that in combustion, respira tion and decomposition, an immense amount of organized matter is dissipated through the air infused into plants by atmospheric pressure, or gathered up by the falling dews, rains and snows, re turned to the earth and the roots of plants, and thence by capillary attraction drawn into the kernel and elaborated as food for man and beast. It also gives the agri culturist power over heat, light, electric ity, (positive and negative,) chemical ac tion, air, earth and water, and enables him to grapple with repulsive elements cold, subsoil water, (corrected by drainage,) malaria, and other negative influences whicU- have baffled the unskilful farmer tor years past. Now that the soil, in the old States, nas lost its natural productive ness, a thorough knowledge of agricultural science is indisputably necessary to ena ble the tiller of the soil to c jnipetc with those who till the rich field of the virg in West. A Wixtku Hint. It must never be fbrgotteir by the farmer that there are works of charity v.mk kindness, that more frequently . press their claims upon him during the winter, than at any other time. While hi3 happy family is clustered round the cheerful hearth; while his table is loaded with the bounties which a. kind IVovidence, personal industry, and a fruit ful soil have given him ; while liis wood house is filled, his granaries overflowing, aad every reasonable want supplied j he must not forget there are other less fa vored individuals or families around ; children destitute of fire aud wood ; wid ows and orphans distressed and destitute, all requiring care, aud not to be forsaken while the frost3 of winter are upon earth. For the poor there must be employment ; for the destitute there must be a supply ; and the honest and industrious, or the un fortunate poor, have claims on the more fortunate, that may not be disregarded. Well directed charity is one of the few aots of life in which both thv giver and the receiver are blessed; let no ojie then forget the poor. Reclaiming Lani.s rnn (1vrikniss IN New Jkhsky.
