Leverage Temperature for the week 31. The County Printing. The present arJ of Commissioners seem to have in- -tit and control of the finances of our little Mountain County. They manifest a iieruiination to pay off old scores ; to put jbi end to compound interest ; and in short, 4 settle up generally and get the county tt of debt. They have dispensed with e services of such officials as they deeni el uncalled for; they have reduced the aipensation of others to the lowest pos- rfble standard; and they have done many ther things too numerous to mention ; gl to curtail expenses ; all to get the Oiunty out of debt. For all this, the Ahe this, uimiscioncrs deserve credit : for all ery taxpayer la me county ougut to be 4&!y thankful. I Uut" a report is current in these parts, tpat the Commissioners might have done I little more than this, and still have done fteir duty. An opportunity to lessen ex gtnses still further, recently presented it ml( to them : but for some reason or oth- t.beat known to themselves perhaps, they J not embrace it. On the contrary, they .rniitted that opportunity to slip quietly .rourh their finirers and effect its escape. I The matter is simply this: The county inuring has hitherto "been given to the llimocrat cfc Sentinel office, at the rates S'larged by the publishers of that estab-l.-hment. The Commissioners, it seems, cently concluded it might be done cheap er by letting it to the lowest bidder, lhey isulvcd upon that plan, therefore, and ;ave notice of the time and place for re- Livin proposals. Ihe several printing Ublisbnients in the county put in their Js ; and on Friday last, they were open- and compared, and the contract award to the publishers of the Cambria Tri te. Now, understanding that the bid jui the AUcgliauian office was the lutccst H pui in, we are really at a loss to know e jrincijIc upon which the Coniinission- declared the letting. If they can ex- jjliin it, they ought to do so. If they Ji.i't explain it, what will we think ? what ill the taxpayers think 1 what will every Jy think ? Turned Up. Adam Kemcrer, the n.-ssing constable of Millville Borough, ri. , 1 v 1 c . . 1 ua-u nearu irnm. come two or uiree weeks ago he returned to the home of his irents in Westmoreland county, and im mediately wrote to his wife, who resides .'71 Y - - Johnstown, to meet him there, stating Iiat he was the victim of misplaced confi- pce. His story is to the effect that, I hue serving a warrant in Blair countv. met with several Englishmen, who in need him to accomnanv them on a pleas- a i re excursion to Canada. After their ar- fival in that romantic region, they further prevailed on him to take a hand at a game I cards. Not being an expert in the mysteries of "euchre," "all fours" or "po- er," in a very short time he succeeded in Jriiinferrin": all the luoncv he had with fioi. into the Dockets of his whiloni nends, leaving himself scarcely enough to fay his way home. Truly, a sad picture ff the heartlessness of man ! A mere hint. Within the past week, yomplainrs, verbal and written, have leached us from about half a dozen of our country subscribers, to the effect that they re not regularly in receipt of their pa ers. One of our friends informs us that f e has not received The Alkyhanian for ;ur weeks, though he has called at his E'ost Office regularly and made inquiries r it Now we repeat and reiterate the ssurancc heretofore made in these col umns, that, if there is any fault in the flatter, it does not rest with us. We con "der it indispensable to the success of our urnal that all who have subscribed for 1 shall receive it, and receive it regularly. i e have done all in our power to promote kis end, and will so continue. If, in the meantime, we can discover any Adminis- ration Official and we think we can Kho makes it a point to work against our furnal because of its politics, tee shall Kake it a point to point that Official out. Sale of Coal Lands. We are in formed, upon what we consider good au thority, that, on Monday last, Mr. Joseph Burkhardt, of Jackson township, sold about twenty-five acres off his farm, for the snug little sum of ten thousand dollars. The purchasers are said to be responsible gentlemen from New York ; a part of the consideration money has been paid ; the contract has been "signed, sealed and de livered and the whole affair may there fore be considered a lona fide transaction. The laud purchased is rich in mineral substances, containing a vast deposit of superior cannel coal. We understand it is the intention of the purchasers, to pro ceed at once to the erection and construe tion of the buildings, machinery, &c, necessary for mining purposes, and for the manufacture of coal oil, on an exten sive scale. A Hail Road from the mines, to connect with the Ebc-naburg and Cres- son Hail Road, is also in contemplation Treatment of Frosted Feet. To cure the intolerable itching that follows frost-bitten toes, it is necessary to totally exclude the air from the affected part If it is not accompanied with swelling, gum shellac, dissolved in alchohol, applied so as to form a complete coat, is the easi est remedy that we know of. It dries soon and does not adhere to the stockings, and generally lasts until the toes are well. If the flesh becomes swollen and painful, plasters of good sticking salves are of great service; but if highly inflamed, any mild poultice that will exclude the oxygen of the air from the diseased part, and keep it moist, allowing the recuperative powers of nature to do the rest. Burns and scalds may be treated succesfully in the same manner, The Campaign Opened. The Repub licans of the borough of Ebensburg met at the Court House, on Monday evening, last, and put in nomination the following excellent ticket : Justice of the Pence, D. H. Roberts. Esq; Conxtalle, Wm. D. Davis : School Directors, Thomas J. Davis, Morris J. Evans; Judge of Election, Is:mc Ex zas: Inspector, John J. Evans; Huraexx. Evan E. Evans : Town Council, Thomas M. Jones, Stephen Lloyd, Esq., G. Alexander Kinkead, Edward Mioemaker, Cnarles Uwcn3 ; Asseasori T. 1. Davis. A nice Ciiance. Those of our readers who are engaged in the business of hotel keeping, or who wish to engage in it, are rccpiestcd to read the advertisement in another column, proposing a lease of the Cambria House, at Wilmore. The stand is universally admitted to be one of the best in the county j the buildings, and al the appurtenances arc ample and well ar ranged, and every thing in good order. Call on Messrs. Lloyd & Hill, Hollidays burg, or W. H. Gardner, Esq., Wilmore, who will doubtless make terms satisfactory. Jcst Received. We notice that our friend, A. A. Barker, Esq., has just re ceived from the eastern cities a large and extensive assortment of Dry Goods, Gro ceries, &c. The extensive patronage he receives is a flattering indication of the merit in which his mode of doing business is held by the public. His major-domo, Mr. D. J.
