Faint as an autumn leaf, Trembling to part; 8o..in that moment brief, Trembled my heart. Nothing I saw but. thee, Nothing could find ; Vision had fled from me, Lingering behind. How I passed along, How found the way, Lightless amidst the throng, . Love could but say. How I had moved my feet, I never knew. I had seen nothing sweet, Since I'd seen you. O, 'twa9 the world to me. Life, too and more ! Catching a glance of thee, Passing thy door. Steve Altant's Mistake. In the town of A- , uo among the mountains ot .New Hampshire, therc;hved a certain old gentleman who rejoices in the name of Steve Altant, or "Old Steve," as he is best .known to the residents of the town : a man better skilled in bear-hunting than in books. He can tell a wonderful tale of hair-breadth escapes from the wild denizens of the forest, better than he can make a speech in the halls of the State Capitol. Yet once old Steve represented his town in the Legislature. His remarks for the "honor conferred" in the town meeting were said to be wonder ful, and without doubt they were as origi nal as his career as a legislator was bril liant. Well the first of June saw Steve enroute for Concord, dressed in his best suit of homespun. In due time he arrived, there, and "put up" at a private dwelling, instead of a hotel, because he could thus save a copper. The next morning Steve was up bright an 1 early, and as soon as he had finished his breakfast, he set out for the State House in a "great takin?" for fear that he would be too late, an i that they "would begin" before, he should get there. Altho igh a stranger in the city, he dis dains 1 to in iuire the way, for fear that the people woald think him green; "so after wanlering about for sometime his eye at last rested on what he supposed to be the buildin-i in question. So he boldly walked in and seeing a man at a desk busily en gaged in writing he accosted him thus: "Fine morning, stranger," "Yes," was the response. "S.iy mister, I have a leetle busines with you," in a tone slightly riled at the laconic response. "Well, what is it?" said the clerk laying down bis pen. , "Sir 'tis this. I suppose I am entitled to a seat in this 'ere building, and I would like for you to show me the way to where the ret of them are." "What do you take this to be?" asked the clerk, a smile playing around his mouth. "The State House, to be sure." , "Tb.3 St3te House ! I fear vou are slight ly mistaken, my friend. This is the State Irison.'' Old Steve gave one look in the face of "the clerk to make sure that he was not jnk in, then hastened from the room to the street, and gave the first person he met a dime to show .him the State House. . That nieht he returned to bog the clerk not to toll of his mistake ; but it was too late. It had spread far and wile, and to cap all he was put on the committee on the State Prison, as it wa observed thai he was well acquainted wirh that institution. The next year old Steve .returned to pri vate life; his constituents thinking it beat to dispense with his distinguished services. If a man wants to get knocked down, let him inquire of old Steve how he likes leis- ' la'ting ! Humorous. "Are you an Odd Fellow?" "No, sir ; I have been married more than a we-ak." "I mean do you belong to the Order of Odd Fellows?" "No; I belong to the order of married men. "Mercy, how dull ; are you a Mason ?" "No, I'm a carpenter." "Worse and worse! Are you a son of Temnerance?" "No, I' nj a son of John Smith." After the Revolution had ended, in 1783. our country covered S20,GS0 square miles. In. 1860, by various acquisitions, this had frown to 3,010,277 square miles, and now, y the Russian ces-ion, -it is 3,491,553 square nriles. The Republic has extended to more than four times its size eighty-four years ago, a fact which should receive hon orable mention from our Fourth of July or ators. . An old man picked up a half dollar in the street. "Old man that's mine," said a keen looking rascal. "Did thine have a hole in it?" asked the old centleman. "les, replied the other smartly. "Then it is not .thine," replied the old gentleman ; "thee must learn to be a little sharper next time." j Prof. .Brenngiessen, of Berlin, has, by feeding hens on certain preparations, suc ceeded in making them lay egjrs, the shells of which are any required thickness, and so Btrongly impregnated with iron as to seem as if cast from that metal. A number are exhibiting at the Paris exposition. A queer thing is an accommodation note when you try to work it off. If you can't ell it, you can cel it, and if you can-eel it, you can't sell it.
