Pipe town, about one o'clock, P. M., destroying their fur naces and the stock In the building, amounting to about four thousand dollars. The wind blowing a perfect hurricane at the time, the efforts of the gal- lant firemen were almost unavailing in checking the course of the flames. Over fifty tenements were reduced to ashes in a short time, depriving over one hundred families of roof and shelter. The flames were checked at length by concentrating the entire fire department at a given point where the deluge of fire was battled with great vigor. Many buildings on Ross street were on fire from sparks, but no serious damage occurred out of "Hard Scrabble." Many of the sufferers owned the houses occupied, on a lease with about two years and a half to run. A number of sick were removed, during the tire, to adjacent buildings and the Mercy Hospital. One or two trifling injuries sustained by falling of bricks, we noticed during the fire. There Wp.B no insurance on the glass manufactory of Messrs.4l4llips & Best. An alarm of tire was given during the conflagra tion in " Hard Scrabble," from Messrs. Barnes & Mackey's cracker factory. First street. The flames ware ohecked, however, before much damage was done. The Contocurs.—We regret to announce that the engagement of Mr. and Mrs. Conway, at our The atre, closed on Saturday night, after one of the most happy and advantageous essays to gratify and de light the public which it has been the good fortune of oar "stars" to make. We have not the space for comment on all the representations and delinea tions of this gentleman and lady, whom nature op. pears to have joined so fitly and genially, both in their profession and domestic relation; but the pub. lic sentiment, which is the beat index to popular judgment, has conceded to their renditions of "The Marble Heart," " Ingomar," " Esmeralda," and "The Love Chase," the most distinguished praise. Their benefit on Friday night was a flattering tribute to their merit. Mrs. Conway. as "Esmeralda." and Mr. Conway, as " The Hunchback," were faultless in those characters. The comedy of "The Lore Chase," on that eight. was rapturously received. In the personification of " Constance" Mrs. C. shone out in great loveliness, and exhibited that captivat ing confidence in herself, which, oombined with her grace end beauty, made her the delight of the ad. miring house. Mr. and Mrs. C. leave Pitt burgh under the melt encouraging auspices, and their speedy return will be hailed with pleasure and re paid by a largely increased patronage, 7•.:47. 744-, r • THE LATEST' -NEWS SEPTEMBER 29 New Tons September 27.—The steamer Illinois arrived with $1,800,000 in specie.
