PITTSBURGH On SEPTEMBER 30th, and on OCTOBER Ist, %d and 3d, 1858. /4 24 ROBT. C. WALKER, Secretary. Railroad Meeting ELECTION OF DIRECTORS 9F THE PITTS BURGH, FORT WAYNE AND CHICAGO RAILROAD. The election for Directors of the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroad, (composed of a consol idation of the Ohio and Pennsylvania, Ohio and In diana, and Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroads,) took place at the Board of Trade Rooms yesterday. The number of stockholders in attendance was very large, and• the election very spirited, as there were a variety of tickets in the field. The meeting was organized by the election of the following gentlemen to act as Judges of the election : Ohio and Pennsylvania Road—J. It. Davis and P. Arnold, Esqrs. Fort Wayne and Chicago Road—Pliny llogland and 0. W. Jeffries, Esqrs. • Ohio and Indiana Road—R. Metheny and J. C. Carters, Esqrs. . Three ballot boxes were then procured, one for each road, and the voting commenced : The voting continued from 10 A. M. till 6 P. M., and was counted off by 10 P. M. It will be seen that the successful candidates are men of the strong est possible character. The following are the names . DIRECTORS: GEORGE W. CASS, President O. & P. It. R. J. EDGAR TROMP. ON, " P. It. R. GEN. WM. ROBINSON, MAJ. WM. WADE, ROBT. M'KELLY, President 0. A I. R. R., GEM. JOHN LARWELL, C. T. SHERMAN, Esq., Co M. BUSKELL, Esq., J. R. EDGERTON, President Ft. W. k C. R. R. HON. SAMUEL HAINA, A. L. WHEELER, Esq., WM. WILLIAMS, Esq., HON. WM. B. OGDEN, DR. JOHN EVANS, THEO. T. MORAN, }:eq. Piti•biloyfh Statist i . e.. —The Assessor of Water rents in Pittsburgh has just finished his walk for the year. By availing ourselves of his labors we are enabled to lay before our readers some figures not without interest to the statist. The number of churches is fifty-two—amply sufficient, we judge, to accommodate all the God-fearing men in the city proper, and leave room for a few outsiders. Of these twenty-seven, or more than one half, are situated in the 3d wand; in the Ist ward, one; 3d do., four; 4th do., four; sth do., seven; t3th do three; 7th do., four: Sth do., one; and 9th one. Besides these there are upwards of a dozen congregations worshiping In halls, rooms, &c. In order to show the increase we subjoin belcw ab streets from the assessments for eight years : Amount a Amassment. 1840.. 186(4. IRSI, 1452_ 1 1 KM,. 1 56,. ed vastly more from 1953 to 15.54 than either hef . .nu or since. The cholera and drought of 1854 gav'ea back-set that could not be recovered immediately: but next year we have no doubt the increase will equal that of 1851. Refire the sun got su warm, yesterday tuurning having a leisure huur or two. we paid a Vitt( to St, • eral of our )ndustria! e. , :tablibulent,, and we propose to give our nutuer, , us readers a littLe .ketch of what we Been and heard, and legit we may net have Cr.,' to day to Leta, all the r ee we ‘irite.l, We first dropped in t, 6, the ritunsice Litho. giaphiit, Drawing, Engraving and Printing establish ment of Wm. Schuehinan ik Bros., (turner of Third and Market streets. Although prepared to witres., tbe various branches at this great art, carried a❑ :n :nanner appruarbing perfertion, we had nu nn.a that .Messrs. S. A. had arrived s,, near t., that point. Set enteen men, among whom are to lo found eminent DeEighers and iiraners from France and Germany, the tootle of the art, are constantly employed by this enterprising firm. This eataislisiii merit has gained quite an enviable repatnti•m, ant from the various specimens we examined. we triad I say it was very justly entitled to it. They are nor.• etantly receiving orders from every section of tl.e country, north, south, east and west, for work in their line. This speaks well for the enterprise and energy of Pittsburgh artists in this department, and before we finish making a minute of oar perigrino. tions among the various bust TiCSS houses of the e:ty, it will be seen that in every other departmei t we have the energy and industry to excel, white oil we want is a little more wegtf rn enterprise in lieral ing forth our advantages to the world. Among other places that we visited yesterday, worthy of notice, after leaving Schurhtnan's, we must mention the manufactory of Messrs. Wardrop. Stout A. WlHiatus, whose office is at the seed store and agricultural hall of Mr. J. Wardrup, 4 and 4 Fifth street. After taking a look through the LEY- ferent apartments belonging to this firm. we could not help but think we had, perhaps, overlooked them in not referring to their enterprising spirit before. We take a pride in seeing energy throughout Pitts burgh, calculated to increase its importance, wealth and business reputaticn succeed, hence our desire to call the attention of the public to the exertions of every one tending that way. From the numerous specimens we examined in this ostablishinent yea• Lerday, we would say that this firm are determined, so Mr as they are concerned, that the reputation of e smoky city, shall not suffer. Farmers and gard nets cannot go wrong in calling on Wardrop, every article used in their line, from the tiny shrub to the pondrous thrashing machine, can there he found. A cider mill that can be set down any where, with which two men can make ten barrels of cider per day, together with corn and cob mills, grain mills, corn shelters, in almost endless va riety, form a portion of their stock. Robbery at the St. Clair liotel.--A bold villain or villains robbed Mr. Foster `hillock, of this cit y , of his gold watch, rained at $175, and upwards of $2O in money, on Tuesday night. .Mr. W., it al pears. feeling like taking a nap late in the afterno.,,,, retired to the room occupied by Allan Brown, Esq., and forgot to take the precaution to lock the door before going to sleep. During the evening, tLo room was entered and the robbery perpetrated, but the theft was not discovered until yesterday morn ing. The's2o were taken out of his wallet, but the latter left behind. Two persons are suspieioned. The 81,0, Th4lt.—Alderman Major yesterday held a further hearing of the case of tieotge and Adam Bell, charged with stealing shoes from a firm in Alle gheny, which they disposed of "cheap for cash" to residents of the 6th Ward, Pittsburgh. The evidence being deemed conclusive, they were finally committed for trial. P.iisoiied.--Tbree children were poisoned on Tues day in Manchester by partaking of cake which was made with washing soda iLoitead bread soda. A Physician was sent for, who administered the preper remadies, and they are now doing well. Finally Committed.—James Nolan, charged with aiding and abetting in the escape of two prisoners from the watch-house some time since, was finally committed yesterday by Alderman Johns to answer at the nest term of the Sessions. ,tl4 oty ' tir. . , ' . t.,:, - - "A -, JULY 31 4.31-SUS I' 13.199 15,3"29 .J 1.477 " i 2.1 t SJ di WO un '0 - # .t , • Terrible Accident. Burned- fo Death.—We team by a pripate letter from ilarrits iburg, that the family of Mr, John Medlam, residing ;on Front street, met with a terrible calamity on Sa tturday evening last, from tihieh tWo of the children have already died, and a one third was so severely harmed, as to render its recovery very problar*tieal. The family consisted of Mr. and Mrs. Medlain and four children, ranging from two to eight years old. The mother had just dressed them, and was tempo rarily absent from the room. While gone, the little boy, some seven years old, who, it seems, had a knowledge of the existence of powder in the house, procured it, and told his sisters he would show them how his father blasted rocks. Placing the powder on the floor, the children naturally gathered round to see toe sport. After igniting a match, the lad touched off the powder, which set fire to their dresses, 1 1 with the melancholy result above noticed. The youngest girl, Sarah, aged two years, died on Sun day morning at throe o'clock, and the eldest, Em ma, aged about eight years, died at a little before three o'clock on Sunday afternoon, after suffering the most excruciating pain. The funeral of the two little girls took place on Monday afternoon, and was argely attended. The boy was very severely burned about the chest and legs, but the physioians yester. day entertained slight hopes of his recovery. The remaining little girl was but slightly burned on the beck, and has now so far recovered as to able to run about. Yesterday was another scorcher—the mercury ranging in the neighborhood of ninety.nine in the shade- -which makes it exceedingly appropos to the following: LAMENT OF A PAT MAN. Some people says this is the hottest weather, We've had for sixty years or more ; and some Do say, 'tie very doubtful whether 'Twill 'gain be so for sixty years to come. (lads ! C i THE L - ATEST N E 447 WASHINGTON, July 3D—House.—Evening—Mr. Colfax in the Chair. Mr. Kelsey opposed slavery and its extension, and favored the admission of Kansas with the Topeka Constitution. Mr. Hoffman insisted upon the importance of ei• tending the time of naturalization to prevent politi cal huckstering in foreign capital, and preserve the Republic. Mr. Carothers justified the repeal of the Missouri Compromise. The only political act of hie life, which he was ashamed, was his having joined the Know Nothings, which he now repudiated, and as an old line Whig, gave his reasons why he preferred Buchanan to Fillmore, who have no chance of elec tion. Mr. Tappan, in .opposing slavery extension, said the Fremont:party were only contending for the appli cation of the principle to Kansas, which Jefferson proposed to all territories of the United States in 1784. The Democracy is now leagued with the Slave power against Freedom. About, a dozen members were present through out the evening, and but few persons in the gal leries. PROTINCETOWN, Mass., July 30.—1 t is stated in letters received here from Green Island Straits, Belle Isle, that a terrific storm occurred there on the first of July, driving twenty-nine vessels est ore at that place. Three vessels were also lost off Dog Island, with all on board. Only one vessel rode out the gale. Three hundred and fifty men are living in tents on Green Island. Two of the wrecked vessels belonged to this port. DAYTON, Ohio, July 30.--The Young Men's Con vention is in session. From 75,000 to 100,000 aro present. Cassius M. Clay and Burlingame are pre sent.
