I • SATURDAY MORNING MAY 3. 1 __— Meeting ai the Merehasa EccJieinge.—A very large meeting of the members of the Merchants' Exc.lmage( and Board of Trade convened last evening at their', rooms on Fourth street. It was generally understood; that the action of the Directors of the Board-of Trade 4 In relation to a petition foewarilcil by Gov. Pollock! from that body, to veto a bill in his possession in re-I gard to Savings Banks and Trust companies was to. be the first matter on bend. A spirited debate sprung up participated in by a number of the members upon the merits of the bill, the jurisdiction of the associ elation to pass upon it, and the feelings of the com munity in relation to it. The almost unanimous en dorsement of the action of the Directors in relation to the matter, by the Association, showed plainly the wishes of the mercantile community upon the bill now in the hands of the Governor. His Excellency may feel assured there is little division of sentiment is this community on this matter. Aw Ustarpeeted Ovation.—The passengers of the steamer " Luzern." were treated to something rich, rare, but not altogether respectable, on her trip last Tuesday from this port to Brownsville. Ac she neared a little village called California, six miles on this side of the latter pleas, a great commotion was observable on the wharf. It appears a youth and maiden who a few abort hours before had entered the matrimonial state were about taking their departure, when a cloud of boys, like so many rooks, commenced the most obstreperous breach of silence by beating upon kettles, pans, and drums, yelling like devils, and tiring off pistols, crackers, and other combusti bles. They had also stationed a considerable num ber of musket barrels on the beach, which were simultaneously fired, as the trembling bride made herself secure beside her lord upon the boat. We thought this old custom of rough serenading was past, at least in daylight, but it seems to still hold sway in California. This golden district is owned, chiefly, by a very respectable gentleman, Job Johnston, Esq., and it appears Job's love of law is not surpassed by his love of order at least, albeit he has potiswcs to bear it; and though they had burst their guns or gullets, still would he consider it no breach of the peace, We hope in all this "Job sinned not," otherwise it ;night not be well for his pp. Lo, the poor ',idiom—three or four Indians from /tome tribe unknown 1:0 as, appeared yesterday among the crowd it the Railroad Depot in Allegheny city, rioeoupedin all the habiliments of warL..-bOwa. ar rows, feathers, beads, and sullen They entertained a large number of spectators fur some time, shooting down oe4s, qtleirt,br& and "ups," with their arrowi, and it wax a matter of great astonishment an well as amusement to behold with what facility they strurk their mark. .lAre felt a thrill 'of admiration oomingied with sympathy, as we looked upon the swarthy sons of the wood, and marked the deep expression of intense earnestness depicted in their faces as they took their aim, and the kindling flash of their dark eye, it they Me the dart strike hems upon the designated spot. An hour afterward, we regret to say, they were oonsiderably advanced toward ••• The kingdom of Potation." To the land of ptre•Wotor." rata/ Accident.—Two mon, one of them a condor for named Thompson, and the other a despatcher named Benshoof, were killed on Thursday at Con. eumugh, on the Pennsylvania Railroad. It np. pears that the train on whbh they wore engaged, stopped at the above point; and that they sat down on the track before the engine, to compare their manifests. Another train approaching at the time, the engineer of Thompson's train blew the whir/tie and put on steam ; but the parties were so intent on watching the other train that they did not mind the approach of their own, and actually set on the track until the locomotive ran over them. Their death was almost instantaneour. ..11:sdemenuor in (Om—W. H. Suttee appeared before Alderman Steel yesterday, and made oath charging Thos. Blacktnere, Esq., with misdemeanor in office. It appears that some sir years ago Mr. Blacirmore was appointed aequertratur-nt-the Pitt.- burgh and Washington Turnpike Company, which become bankrupt some time before; and that he has _ bow m en C..to fill' -wrin and the Monongahela bridge is in an almost impassable condition, and Mr. Sutton charges Mr. Illackmore with misdemeanor in office, in neglecting to keep it in proper repair. Mr. B. gave bail fur bin appearance at court. llama of interest.—The Alliance Ledyer says the loss by the late hurricane iti that district will almost reach $lOO,OOO Abraham Carpenter, the brakes man mu badly injured on the Pennsylvania railroad. a few d ays ago, died of his injuries on Wednesday. Mrs. Murray, widow, of the late Dr. Murray, of Canonsburg, Pa., died very suddenly at the Sprigg House, Wheeling, night before last. Her remains were sent back to Canonabnrg for interment The work of disinterring the remains of those buried In the Methodist and Catholic grave yard,' at the canal bridge has been finished. Rue rerses Doa—Richard Roe, supposed to be the defendant In a rase almost as interminable all the celebrated chancery suit of Jarndyce versus Jarn dyne, was before Alderman Parkinson yesterday, on a charge of drinking too deeply of something else than the pure juioe of the grape. Richard was asked to '• Joe up," but not having the wherewithal, the stern magistrate of the law decided on sending '• up" the defendant, Roe. It is to be hoped that the case of John Doe and Richard Roe is now satisfactorily sot. ttled, and that no similar ono may arise to perplex lawyers and mystify the public. TM Psoiteetiory.—There are now is the Western Penitentiary, in charge of Major Bockhiun, 198 con victs-144 males and 2 females. During the month of April there were 5 admitted and 13 dischargo'. The general health of the prisoners was never better, as we learn from the polite Warden. Number 175.5 Atha law states the prisoners shall be designated by numbers instead of their names,) who was wounded by a shot from one of the sentries in attempting to escape the other day, is recovering. The wound re ceived was a dangerous ono. ft will be worth the walk and time to visit the maehine shop and nut factory of Messrs. Haigh, Hartupee et Co., in the vicinity of the Point- The machines for cutting, pressing and punching nuts of ever/ sine, is altogether novel and very intaresting to witness the process. These nuts, now turned out by the ton daily, bare always been hitherto mode by hand at great cost. We were informed at this estab lishment that their orders largely exceed their ca pacity to supply. W. understand the members of the Duquesne tireys have sent for the remains of George Beale, Jr., recently deceased at Norfolk, Virginia. Mr. Beale was long and warmly attached to the above spirited oorpe, and Its action now Is a just measure of respect to the memory of the deceased. The re mains may be expected early next week, when duo notice will be given of the funeral. Jiewrie.—" Why that Tear 7 "—ballad. Words and inu. , o by Anne Tricker. THE LATEST NEWS BY TELEGRAPH. THIRTY-FGCRTIL CONGRESS I BST 111L8810N. WeentrelTOß, May 2.—Mr. Benjamin addressed the Senate at length on Kansas affairs, Mr. Benjamin said that three times within the short history of the Republic bad its internal peace been imperilled and each• time the disturbing element was the same. When, it 1854, it was finally agreed to, repeal; in terms, thatwhich for more them a quarter of a century bad ceased to have any active effect, that was used as ground for vituperation toward the south. She was accused with violating plighted faith, with; very much the same regard to truth which was re l cently observedriere in mendacious tales in regard to Kansas affairs. The seeking for other compromises than those in the Constitution was mistaken policy on the part of the south; and, thank Heaven, the south has become aware of her error. She has no longer any compromises to offer or accept. She would' adhere to the Constitution. If its previsions be vio lated to her injury then she would calmly end res olutely withdraw from the compact all obligations to which she was expected scrupulously to adhere, and from all the benefits from which she is ignomin iously repulsed. He contended that the crusade against slavery on the part of the north was merely a struggle for power. They have been so persistent ly led by the perversion of truth as to induce them almost to hate the southern white man and love the black in preference. In condemning the American party he remarked that it was powerless for aught but mischief and to help the Republicans, the contest being narrowed down between the latter and the democracy: and the Whig party being extinct, he declared it his purpose to join the Democratic party and use his utmost efforts to ensure its success, following the example of better and abler men than himself. Ile predicted that in its triumph the Constitution would he secured, good feeling restored, intolerance re buked, the equality of the States maintained, the corner stone of the government fabric preserved in tact, and peace and happiness smile upon the land. Mr. Cass complimented Mr. Benjamin. saying that the sentiment; just uttered ought to tel a reepOllAo in every patriotic heart. Ilia object to riming woe say that his friend from Mississippi, Mr. Brown, had assailed squatter sovereignty ; and several of Brown's scattering weapons had hit him. ( Laughter.) Th is squatter sovereignty he called right self-government ; it was dear to our fathers of '7II, and dear to tlc., desomidants of 'h6. lie wanted to rescue it from mis representations oast on it, and asked to have the floor un Thursday next fur that purpose. (Cries of " agreed '") Mr. Seward, replying to part of Mr. Benjamin's remarks affecting himself, said that the gentleman might have defined his own partisan history and future ocuree without bringing him before the Sen ate and the uountry. Seven years ago, when he colored the Senate, being aware that every word said her,. was recorded ist the expense of $7,50 a column, isc had announced that on no oeeasion and under no sir • cum, tazions should any member draw front his state ment or words, anything by which, independ• eutly of the measures he maintained or defended, it could Ins known whether he was a Whig. Democrat. or abolitionist, or whether he belonged to ono party or another. Ile thought it.undignifled thus to ele• 'rate party and give, it place in the history• of the senate. He had not risen to assign the objeets or purposes of his public motions; they explain then, sel ;if they do not, be was willing to rest under all the reproach which posterity might cast on him. Mr. Hale alluded to what herald were grossly p e r ,anal attacks upon him in Mr. Clay's recent speech He remarked that be haul but one word to submit in reply : that it will take something besides malig nity to redeem imbecility from emitempt. Mr. Clay sprang on his feet greatly excited. say log: "I defy the Senator'. malice as much as con damn his bruMiDOSII ; no man shall assail toy right..., or those of my constituents, and shirk the responsi. The !tore ship Illinois brought 43 eases of silk goods from Canton via San Francisco, and the loth- WWI of Panama, being the first importation of China goods ever arrived at this port by express across the I sth mus. Walker. Kansas ♦Ralrs Ilosros, May 2.—ln the State Senate two reports wore submitted from the special committee upon Kansas affairs. The majority reported a series of r e solutions taking strong northern ground, and de nouncing the interference of the Border Ruffians, the bogus territorial legislature, and the course of the national administration ; declaring that Kansas should be admitted as a Free State, and commend ing the cause to the sympathy of the people of Mas sachusetts. The resolutions were ordered to a second reading. The minority report, which is signed by two members of the committee, maintains the legal ity of the territorial legislature and laws, and sus tains the course of the administration. The Whigs of the legislature and many prominent Whigs of the State, had a meeting in the State House. Resolu tions were adopted adhering to Whig principles, and declaring that they will enlist in the ranks of no party that does not "bear the flag and keep step to the music of the Union."
