AFFAIRS TUESDAY MORNING The Confidence Man About AT-alt.—That erratic individaal, the confidence man, whose operatione ap pear to extend to all portions of the country, has again turned up in our midst with a kink " some what stale in the east, but entirely new here. On Saturday, as a young, unsophisticated Herman, named Frederick Benautz, was passing up Wood street, when in front of the Assembly Buildings, he was accosted by a gentlemanly looking fellow, who wanted to know whether ho was not desirous of se curing a good situation. A reply in the affirmative was given, when the other told him to follow, and he would make an engagement with hint. The two then passed up stairs into one of the offices in the building, which the rascal, no doubt, was aware had no occupant, where he pointed out to the young man a desk, and informed him of certain duties he would have to perform, promising him nt the same time a very liberal salary. The terms were very satisfacto ry to Frederick, and ho promised to come hack on Monday, and cuter upon the duties of his situation. His employer offered objections to this, as he was afraid of being disappointed. but finally offered to let him go on condition ho would leave his gold watch, worth about- forty dollars, as security for his return. The simple-minded German, supposing it was all right, readily acceded to the request, and went away under the firm belief that he had secured a profitable situation and a clever employer. Yester day morning he returned, and was nu little astonish ed to learn from the real proprietor that no person answering to the description of the man who engaged him, belonged there, and that the whole affair was a fraud to swindle him out of his watch. In Setert Council, Mr. Murdock presented the ro port of the Joint Committee of Streets'and Railroads to whom was reforred the matter of the right of way MARCH 11 to the Allegheny Valley Railroad. The report states that the route along Duquesne Way, as asked for by the company, would be seri ously detrimental tothe interests of the city, destroy ink the utility of the wharf below the aqueduct, end greatly reducing the revenue therefrom, and that above the aqueduct, in addition to being very ex pensive to the company, would be vastly detrimental to a large number of manufactories. The route down Pike street to the canal is, in the opinion of the com mittee, the inset expensive and least feasible of all routes. The street is but forty feet wide, and to ad mit a ra il r oad track, would have to be widened twenty feet, which would cost an immense amount, and destroy the hard-earned property of many peo ple in inoderate circumstances. The route by Lib erty street is considered of easy grades and unob struetod by impedimenta of any kind, except so far no a portion of it is now occupied by the track of the Central Railroad. It is admitted to bo the cheap est, as well as the best route by which the Point can be reached, and the main objection u, it appears to be that it is already in the occupancy of another company. This objection. the committee thought, woo fully provided for in an ordinanee drawn up and submitted with their report. The city having $4.00,000 of stack in the road, and the county $750,- 000, in which hatter amount the city, as a tax-payer, is also interested to the amount of one-half, it may to. safely said the city is interested to the amount of $775,000. In this view of the subje , t, the commit tee deemed it their duty to recommend the adoption of the Liberty street route, as the least expensive, the most feasible, and the len-t injur:ous to the in terests of private citizens.
