The tax for its support is just about five-eights of a mill on the dollar. That small tax wjll hardly be grudged for such a purpose. SEABOARD SLAVE STATES The above is the title of a new book just is sued from the press of Dix & Edwards, New York. Its author is F. L. Olmstead, who is al ready favorably known to the public as a pleas ing and instructive writer. It contains over seven hundred pages : and gives a large amount of information in regard to the proiluctions, cli mate, soil, institutions, manners and social con dition of the seaboard States of the South. Tie gives much attention to the condition of the ne groes in slavery. The culture of rice and cotton is described and statistics given. Probably from no book can a uun•e correct idea be gained as to the people, the institutions and the condition of the older States of the South. The author's views on the subject of slavery might not suit all. Tue ExeLisii Paess.—The tone of the Eng lish press towards the country is decidedly pa cific of late, and a majority of the papers seem to consider the Central American affairs not worth the trouble of a contest with this country. Some recommend an abandonment of the Mos quito protectorate and of the Bay Islands. In other words they advise a compliance with the treaty of 1850. That was to be expected. The English people would not favor the violation of a treaty. It is only Lord Palmerston and his especial friends that wouli4 venture upon such dishonorable and dangerous measures. It is now probable that the treaty will lie complied with, and the difficulties amicably settled. FRANCISCAN lillmTllEßl3.—The passage of au act of incorporation, in the House of Represen tatives, for the Franciscan Brothers, of Cambria county, seems to have disconcerted the nerves of a few Know Nothings in the 'Legislature. TOWNs BURNED ON THE FEJEK ISLANDS Et A U. S. SLoHP - OF - WAH.--The sloop-of-war John Adams arrived at Panama on the 3,1 inst., with important news from the Fejee Islands. She left Panama in July last, bound to the home of these savages, to inquire into and seek repara tion for cruelties practised un American shippers and traders, whose vessels were plundered. Commander ISoutwell had five engagements with the cannibals luring his cruise among the Fejee group, and was compelled to destroy five large towns before he could bring them to terms. All of their houses were reduced to ashes. and the result was the making of a treaty bet woen Tho kambau, King of Fejer, and Commander flout well. The timely visit of the John Adams, it is said, bas re-established order, and the Ameri cans residing at the Mee Islands are now pur suing their business unmolested by the depreda. February 13, 1<,.. l'itisturgher away from homy takes a hvel interest in every thing connected with the pr, , perity of his native place In the money circles this city there seems to be an unfavorable tin pression in regard to city of Pittsburgh and county of Allegheny bonds, growing out of the fact that the city and county were called upon in January last to provide for the interest on their bonds given to th? Pittsburgh and Stenben stile Railroad. The position of that road is by no means flattering, yet, we hasp reason to be lieve, under the present Board of Directors, a .atisfactocy arrangement will be entered into with capitalists here or elsewhere to complete that work at len early day, and to provid e against the repetition of it call Upon the city and county for future interest instahnents. but the prompt ness with which the county and Ow city respond ed to the call for the interest in January •how. they are properly alive (heir own honor, and -lionld be a guarantee to those holding their oblig.,tion• that they will. at all }infant , . con tinue to meet future demand , . of a ,intlar nature It i- time ..eough L. r. , n-lcuns thm.ni when (hr% hr.vohi/, In, : but I 1:1110W there arc gr•ntlem~•n Pittsburgh and Alleglieuy count ) who are willing and able to advance a whole years inter est and await repayment fri the taxes which will be immediately levied for that purpose. The public debt of Allegheny county except to Rail. roads is very light, not over $200,000 and that of the city cannot exceed $1,250,000 according to Legislative enactment,, exclusive of that to Rail_ roads. Compare these facts and figures with the debt hanging over this city now in gross about $20,000,000 and when will you find better or safer securities than those of the city of Pius burgh or the county of Allegheny' Allegheny county has subscribed to other roads besides the Pittsburgh and Steubenville, to be sure, but is it likely she will be called upon to pay the interest for those roads actually in operation. For in stance, on the $1,000,000 of bonds issued to the Pennsylvania Central. I think not. A plain unvarnished statement of the liabilities and re- sources of our city and county would show hold ers of our bonds their intrinsic worth and cause them to appreciate in value in this market. Al ready a change has taken place in their favor, and within the last few days l f per cent. advance has been paid with a tendency to higher figures.
