GAZETTE AND HIGH SCHOOL
The Pe.,/ made 'no mistake in publishing the
receipt for taxes on Friday morning. We knew
that such receipts had been used by the collect
ors, and that they had excited a strong preju
dice against an institution that is not very ex
pensive, and that in calculated to do much good.
People did not understand the matter. They
were led by those receipts to suppose that the
high sehool cost four Cr five times as much us it
actually doe .\n explanation 5, a- uweded.
',Ve called fur it, got it, anti pulthshed It on . . , 01-
urtlay morning. Rut we got more. It brought
out the Go:e(1, In favor of the 5C13 ,, 01. • It calls
it a praiseworthy and beneficent institution."
The publication of the receipt has accomplished
what was designed, and there is no doubt peo
ple will he better satisfied with it the better they
understand its cost'nnd its character. The tax
for its support is just about five-eights of a mill
on the dollar. That small tax wjll hardly be
grudged for such a purpose.
It is the assessment of the Ward Boards for
building debts, that has made the taxes so
much higher last year. That will not be con
tinued long.
As :In effort will be made this session to repea
the high school law, it is time the matter wa.
fairly understztotl.
SEABOARD SLAVE STATES
The above is the title of a new book just is
sued from the press of Dix & Edwards, New
York. Its author is F. L. Olmstead, who is al
ready favorably known to the public as a pleas
ing and instructive writer. It contains over
seven hundred pages : and gives a large amount
of information in regard to the proiluctions, cli
mate, soil, institutions, manners and social con
dition of the seaboard States of the South. Tie
gives much attention to the condition of the ne
groes in slavery. The culture of rice and cotton
is described and statistics given. Probably from
no book can a uun•e correct idea be gained as to
the people, the institutions and the condition of
the older States of the South. The author's
views on the subject of slavery might not suit
all. But it is sti seldom that we can come across
an impartial and candidly written book !Tinting
to the Southtliai ,'nn read this with interest

Tue ExeLisii Paess.—The tone of the Eng
lish press towards the country is decidedly pa
cific of late, and a majority of the papers seem
to consider the Central American affairs not
worth the trouble of a contest with this country.
Some recommend an abandonment of the Mos
quito protectorate and of the Bay Islands. In
other words they advise a compliance with the
treaty of 1850. That was to be expected. The
English people would not favor the violation of
a treaty. It is only Lord Palmerston and his
especial friends that wouli4 venture upon such
dishonorable and dangerous measures. It is
now probable that the treaty will lie complied
with, and the difficulties amicably settled.
FRANCISCAN lillmTllEßl3.—The passage of au
act of incorporation, in the House of Represen
tatives, for the Franciscan Brothers, of Cambria
county, seems to have disconcerted the nerves of
a few Know Nothings in the 'Legislature. It may
be Messrs. MTalmont, Morris and M'Combs

TOWNs BURNED ON THE FEJEK ISLANDS Et A
U. S. SLoHP - OF - WAH.--The sloop-of-war John
Adams arrived at Panama on the 3,1 inst., with
important news from the Fejee Islands. She
left Panama in July last, bound to the home of
these savages, to inquire into and seek repara
tion for cruelties practised un American shippers
and traders, whose vessels were plundered.
Commander ISoutwell had five engagements with
the cannibals luring his cruise among the Fejee
group, and was compelled to destroy five large
towns before he could bring them to terms. All
of their houses were reduced to ashes. and the
result was the making of a treaty bet woen Tho
kambau, King of Fejer, and Commander flout

said, bas re-established order, and the Ameri

interest in every thing connected with the pr, ,

this city there seems to be an unfavorable tin
pression in regard to city of Pittsburgh and

fact that the city and county were called upon
in January last to provide for the interest on
their bonds given to th? Pittsburgh and Stenben

no means flattering, yet, we hasp reason to be

Mrs. Lucy Stone Blackwell again made her
appears nee in the U. S. Court, daring the pro
gTess of the Fugitive Slave trial yesterday.
There 'eel been some excitement relative to a re
! port that she had attempted to furnish the slave
wernan, who had cut her daughter's throat, with
' n dagger, that she might kill the rest of her
children and her. eil. The statement tl,n she
Intl proposed to In that wa. , made by :Marshal
Brown, and was alluded to by fel. Chandwrs in
his argument. Mr. litre asked leate. on be.
half of Mrs Imey. that she should be heard in
her defense. , thjectimis were !made, and the
lady waited until the court n limErned. when she
!wo we d to Mr- Lucy denied sol
emnly that she had ever asked Marshal Brown
r, n knife In gile the woman, :ind said that dolt
eantleman would n o t say In I n -,- face that 'ho
had. She had had a talk with Mr. Caines, who
claimed to own the woman, had approached
the pour woman iunl endeatorisl to enmfert and
encourage her, and had cull h er that if , he and
her family were remanded t o slavery, there were
theusands who weuhl rejoice that One of her
children had gone to anetiler world. She said it
was a pity the poor slave noncan could nut have
a knife. if she (Lucy! were a slave she would
open her veins with her tooth rather than en
dure
life. She lims] that the Commissioner
would obey the higher law, and free the slaves,
or if the decisbin were otherwise, that some mie
would whisper in the slave mother's ear that with
her teeth she might drain her heart's blood and
win freedom. She (Mrs. Illaekwell) had con
versed with Mr. ;Uhl he had said that he
would nit hold the woman a, H. dare even if she
were given up to 111111. She hoped he meant to
keep his promise. In conclusinn she said that
she would ever point the slave to freedom, either
in Canada or the grave. Iler remarks were fol
lowed by applause and hisses. Col. Chambers
rose to correct the lady on one point. Ili% client
who sat beside him denied that he iver promised
to set Margaret free, tlutt what he said was, that
if she was returned In him, he WoUld use his
pleasure in regard bi giving her her freedom.
Mrs. Blackwell returned thnt what she had
uttered was correct, and that he had promised
not to told her a.. a slave.
