It is Nonpareil and Brerier, and in good condition, as any one can see by looking at a copy of the paper of last week. It will be sold cheap for cash. County Committee of Correspondence. The Democratic County Committee of Correspond ence will meet at the St. Charles Hotel, Pittsburgh, on Saturday, December 1, 1555, at 11 o'clock, A. M. Punctual attendance is requested. SAMUEL W. BLACK, Chairman November 23, 1855. CINCINNATI AND PITTSBURGH We have received a copy of the annual state ment of the Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce for thin year. It is well got up in a pamphlet form of some thirty pages, and gives a very flattering account of the present prosperity and prospects of that city. It is a great city •• and bound to be greater;" but we will wager some thing that Pittsburgh will, at no distant day, be a larger and wealthier city than Cincinnati. It has probably more solid wealth now. The consumption of coal in that city this year was over 10,000,000 bushels. Our city and county sold them the greater portion of it Their gas and water works require this year 900,000 bushels. The writer says coal is super seding wood for fuel. and that in n fete year. no wood will be used. The arrivals of lumber at Cincinnati aro very large every year; and it comes principally from the Allegheny and Cla rion regions of Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh beats Cincinnati and every other western city in build ing steamboats. In 1z..452 there were s:i steamer , built at Pittsburgh. and hat •1J at Cincinnati. We have not at bawl the statistics of a later date; but know that our city still builds the moot. liut the steamboat butineax of Cincinnati is very large. It is a distributing point for that line of business. In IS5° the number of passen gers arriving at and leaving that city by steam ers was 2,400,746. Thu number to and from Pittsburgh was but 40t3,553. The number of steamboat arrivals at Cincinnati during the year IS3il was i:l4. with a tonnage of over 80,000 tons. The growth of Cincinnati has been very rapid• and the author of the report indulges in the allegation that if its growth continues at tho same rati-1 as beretof, ire until 1890 it will then contain ita.Q.aou people. That is a delusion. Al the population of a city increases the rote!, increase diminishes. Cincinnati has got near er to its full growth and maturity than Pitt burgh. KNOW NOTHING CANDIDATES John J. Crittenden, Millard Fillmore and tieorge Law are the most prominent aspirant, for the honor of getting a sound thrashim from the Democrats next year. It i- , a ,ingular feet that both the first named gentlemen, a- a Louisville paper says, are far 111.• re popular awity from home than at home Mr. Fillmore has soirne strength in the South, but little in the north. He could not command one-third (if the totes iif his own State. He is a respectable Whig of the old fogy school. Crittenden is a good lawyer, as ho proved by getting \tat Ward, who killed ties school-master, clear of the hemp. That R - 1, Mr. Crittenden's greatest exploit as a lawyer At a political speaker he i= eloquent ; hut us u statesman he is n way distinguished. Getirge Late is the lest man of clip three. though w,thout a particle of political t.iperietice. But we opine that Mr Cr,ttenien ,tan-14 je , t nvw the best chance for a nomioatt•-n Southern Know Nothings need encouragem.•nt, and they will in sist on having the candidate. Mr Crittenden may ^ ring in " on that argument . but north ern Free Soilers and school-masters will not vote for him. CNITED STATTA SENATOR ctrESTION IS MIA SOCRI.—There is a good deal of excitement in Missouri in regard to the pending Senatorial election to supply the vacancy caused by the term of David H. Atchison expiring last March. Hon. Henry S. Geyer, Whig, was chosen in ISf.O in place of Mr. Benton, by a portion of the Atchison men coalescing with the Whigs. Last year upwards of one hundred hallotings were had to fill Atchison's place, hut neither of the three parties having a majority a conclusion wa• not arrived at. It is now proposed to elect two Senators—to supply the vacancies of IS:in and 1867—as there is noting prohibiting such a pro ceeding, although the custom has been different : and for this purpose the Benton men have agreed to vote for Col. Doniphan, Whig, if his friends will throw their influence in favor of Old Elul- lion." If the thing succeeds it will be a com plete triumph over that border ruffian " Atchi son and his Know Nothing followers, who hare been instigated in their raids. on Kansas as much by a hope to make Senatorial capital no by a desire to implant slavery in that territory. Each month about 15 pages of the magazine will he devoted to the novel. THE Detroit Fro Press, in speaking of the im provement of the Ohio river on the plan proposed, says it •• would thus be converted into the most stupendous and capacious canal in the world." Ace, and the most useful and valuable, too. A steamboat canal a thousand miles long, hear ing the commerce of more than half the States of the Union. Such is the • canal we need, and taut have. It would be worth four railroads of the same length, and would not cost one-tenth as much. We are glad to see that the papers all over the country are 'peaking favorably of the project. TII 11 WEATHER at TH 1. Sq./14TH .--In the vicinity of Utica, N. Y., the sleighing is good, and the stage coaches departed from that city on Friday morning on runners. At Pittsfield, Max,., on Wednesday last, there Was good sleighing, and at Albany ice formed an inch thick on the canal on Thursday night. The Montreal Pilot of the 19 t h says. o the hells are jingling merrily through our streets, and we suppose that Winter may he considered as fairly inaugurated in hi- , ice-man tled dominions. The thermometer i‘ only nix degrees above zero." " THE PITTSBURGH POST.—This excellent new, paper has made its appearance in entire new habili. menu, looking as fresh and inviting as might be wished for. This evidence of success we are happy to record.' The above is from the Cincinnati Enquirer, and we see the same eviaence of prosperity in that paper. It has donned a new dress also, and looks very neat. ' A Washington quid aunt gives it us his opinion that the next National Democratic Convention will be called in May. We give it for what it is worth. The Convention meets in Cincinnati. NOVEMBER Cu Mr. Thaekeray has refused to lecture both in Mon treal and Hamilton. He says it is not his intention to visit Canada during his present tour. It is pos sible his severe strictures on "The Four Georges" may not suit the loyal ears of the Canadians. Mr. Fillmore was liberally and handsomely enter tained by the Hon. Mr. Belmont, American Minister at the Hague. at whose house he stayed. The re ception by Mr. Belmont of the Kr-President, was on a scale of grand magnificence. It Is significant to see the satne adopted citizen so bitterly assailed by Mr. Fillmora's Know Nothing friends opening his house to the Great Mogul of Know Nothingism. The Auditor of Public Accounts of Virginia re ports the State revenue for the year to have amount ed to 31.7.16,958, exeltusive of a temporery loan of 5400,000. The disbursements for the same time amounted to $2,182,588. The receipts fall $.538,535 below the, estimates, and the disbursements exceed the estimates by only 5203. The balance in the State Treasury on the Ist of October was $15,018. A bill has been introduced in the Tennessee leg.- 'attire for the purchase of the Hermitage by the State of Tennessee. The Nashville Union says that " Ten nessee should own the ground in which repose the remains of her moot illustrious son. The property can now he purchased on reasonable terms, and it should be owned by the people. That the to- ple would say so, if the decision were in their hands, we hese no doubt: and we trust there in no doubt that their representatives will say so too." A somewhat singular decision was made by two different Courts in Ohio recently, in the ease of a young man named Lockhart. who, upon being set at liberty by a pardon, immediately committed another crime, whereepou the Uncurl:3er remanded hi m to the penitentiary for violation of the conditions of the executive clemency.
