STEA3ISOAT EXPLOSION.—About three o'clock
yesterday afternoon, the steamer Dispatch round. ,
cd to at Sl:Kees-port for the purpose of taking a l
coal fiat in tow, whilst making the flat fast one of
-the boilers explOded, tearing away the entire hur=l
ricane of the boat and scalding-six men, three of
them severely. We have been unable to procure
the names of but four of the individuals scalded,

they are, Daniel Marclay, fireman, Monongahela!
City; Mr. Pearce, passenger, Monongahela City;
Mr M'Clure, irms , mger, Eliiabeth, and a boy, about
14 years of age, - named Butchinson; the boy is so
severely sealded that his life is despaired of. Capt
Is:M.sox was standing alt at the time of the explo
sion, and luckily escaped uninjured. The boat,
we understand, is a total wreck.

inst., says, the Pearl, a new boat from Pittsburgh.
came in contact, on Monday night with the Omega,
near Cairo, and greatly damaged her: The Ome
ga, at the time, .was engaged in an effort to assist
another boat, aground, and the disaster was primly
accidental.

'We received last night. a full senthem mail,
bringing_New Orleans papers to the Oth inst., late
as due. We extract the following items of news:
Bearer of Dispatches to Cam. conuer.--The Pen
sacola Democrat of the sth instant says:
"We nnderstand -that important government dis
patches were received by this morning's mail, by
Capt Gregory, of the U. S. frigate Raritan, to be
farwarded to Com. Conner, off Vera Cruz. The
revenue cutter Wolcott, Capt.Tatio, will sail to
day for Yera Cruz, to carry thither an officer with
said 'dispatches."
Frinn Havana—The brig Confidence, Capt Plea
,ants, arrived at New Orleans on the Bth inst. from
Havana, having sailed on the Ist inst. The lateSt
news they had in Havana of Mexican affairs they
received from New Orleans. Nothing is.stated in
- the papers before us about Santa Ana or his affairs.
From Texas.—The steamer Fashion,. Capt. Ful
lerton, arrived at New Orleans, on the Bth inst, in
82 lours from Port Lavaca, Texas.
No news from the army. No mo‘cment was
expected to.take place until after the arrival of
thewag,ons,horsCs and munitions.
linportaiit to the Foluideers--The Picayune ofthe
Bth inst., says:—'Gov. Johnston has taken the re
sponsibility of instructing the Paymaster of the
United States Army at this point, to allow tl.e
volunteers from this State full pay, without the stop
page or drawback forclothin. In this decision of
the Govenor, the Paymaster rim s'gnified hisacqui
esc-:nce. The disbanded volunteers will thereibre
receive full pay, without the discount for clothing.
This will enable most of the volunteers to draw a
sum sufficient to take them home. .

Another Pricatecr Mawell, of
the ship Robert Kerr, arrived at New Grleans on
the Sth inst., from LiverpOol, that on the 25th
when betwen the-Isle' of Pines and the Grand Cay
mans; he was chased by a “suipicions, long, low,
rakish looking smack." He rounded to and
ran up his colors, when the smack bore away to
the windward, and lie saw no more of her.
IMPORTANT FROM THE PACIFIC
California Proclaimed Independent of Ilfe.riro.—
in the Kingston Jamaica Journal, of the 22a ult.,
the'Nevc Orleans Delta finds an article copied from
the Despatch of the same city, which begins "len
portant from the Pacific," and goes on:
"We learn on good authority that accounts
by H. M. brig Daring, announce the important fact
that the inhabitants of Upper California had pro
nounced themselves independent of the Republic of
Mestico, and placed themselves under the protec-
lion of the United States. It is said! that in con
sequence of this movement on the ;part of the
CaliforniaS, the ()dicer in command of the Ameri
can squadron had hoisted the flag of the United
States on this portion of the Mex:lcati territory.
"Vice Admiral 'Seymour had proceeded to the!
Southward for the purpose. it was said, of collect
ing his squadron, and
,we should imagine that
a collision must be almost inevitable."
. The remainder of the article is made up of the
speculations of the editor on the event. We are
ourselves rather inclined to think that the ac-!
counts brought by the brig Daring were founded
on report rather than on fact. We shall soon know.

as both the pills and the pretended patent are for
geries, got up by a miserable quack in New York,
who, Air the last four or five years, has made his
living by counterfeiting popular medicines.
Crir - Remember, Dr. C. V. Clickener.is the original
inventor of Sugar Coated Pills, and that nothing of
the sort was ever heard of until he introduced them
in June, 1543. Purchasers should, therefore, always
ask for Clickener's Sugar Coated Vegetable Pills, and
take no other, or they will be made the victims of a
fraud. mar
rpnE WILSON PILLS, as a remedy peculiarly
adapted for headaches and dyspeptic affections,
are pretty generally known and esteemed in this
community; and the proprietor, so often as he has
occasion to write or speak of them, can scarcely re
frain from an expression of his grateful acknow•letlg
ments to his friends for their patronage and kindness
to him. His feelings are the warmer from observing
the "beginning and the ending"—thlown almost in
juxtaposition—of so many nostrums add kindred pre
parations equally loud in their pretensions, and
much more industriously presented •to the public;
while his preparation noiselessly advances, even to
remote places, soothing and comforting the afflicted,
and permanently gralting itself upon the affections
of new friends, thus continually widening the circle
of its usefulness. Although well satisfied that his
medicine has, as it were, a principle of perpetuity in
it, yet he is obliged to his friends for the most sub
stantial evidence of the fact.
In its natural history, if you please, the Wilson
Pill differs from most other preparations in not being
originally made-for sale, or with a - view to pecuniary
profit; while 'as every body knows, the greatest tyro
(as a general thing) no sooner begins to dabble M
drugs than he casts about for some cheap prepara
tion, or must 'get up,' as the phrase is, something '
anythingthat will sell. Often he attempts it under
an assumed or fictitious name, as though conscions
his own were insufficient to sell it. The difference
then between the Wilson Pill and the preparations:l
have just indicated, would appear to he this: The
consciousness of the value of my pill originated
the idea of putting them on sale for money, and at I
price. The consciousness of the value of money .
originates in most instances the many preparations
I have alluded to; and the price most likely 'to take'
is always first carefully considered, and the . pill or
other preparation made and graduated to suit it. The
one is a DISCOVERY, and comes from the great Arcana
of Universal• Nature; the other a trick or invention,
and comes from a not very popular quality.of hum-

great. In one instance the value attached to thermt
is the starting paint; in the other, the MONEY. But
