Total, $111,515 It is confidently believed that Err the above sum of $111.512, all damages dune by the late freshet con be repaired, and oar canals placed in as good a condition as they were Wore it occurred, and that the several lines of imprownients will be repaired and ready for navigation. OS follows, vii: The main line from Elarrinbarg to Pittsburg, by the 30th instant, and from Harrisburg to Columbia by the 2d day of April next. The West Branch and Delaware divisions by the .15th day el April next. The Susquehanna division by the Ist day of May next, and the North Branch division by the 20th of May next. The extent of the damage suffered by the state to her public works, is thus ascertained to ho not near so great as was generally apprehended, while the waters were at thisir greatest height, and bears no c nnparison to that which has been stultified by individuals and companies throughout the state, to their improve menu. The Board being deeply impressed with the neces sity of securing an early communication wit h the West, by the male line, and fully convinced that the State would loan more in tolls and he diversion of trade, by the delay of a single month, than would defray the whole expenseof repair on all the lines. have urged forward the work of repair on the main line, with all the energy in their power to exertynd are happy in being able to state, that the recent disaster will not cause a delay of more than two weeks, beyond the time it was contemplated to have opened navigation. on this portion of our Public works. The Delaware division has also been urged forward, with all practi cable dispatch, to have it ready for the opening of the Lehigh company's canal, which has sustained but slight damage, and to accommodate the greatly increas ed quantitrof coal, now waiting an avenue to market by this irnpmvement i . The officers in charge of the canals along the Sus rprehanna and branches, are also progressing rapidly with the necessary walk of repair on their respective lines, and every effort is being made by them, to got the navigation openea at the oiliest period practicable, in order to permit the large amount of agricultural and mieral productions, which urn now looked in that region, to get an early market. Thu Board cannot, therefore, urge too atfongly upon the Legislature, the • necessityof making immediate provisions to meet the cost of these repairs, as the men employed in doing the work aro, a class moritorious eqour fellow atizons. for whom payments canot be too prompt!) provided. Much to my gratification, ho informed •rtte, that the repairs made upon it during tho winter, were of the most substantial and, permanent character; that it ap peared to be nearly as good as new. This ledlne to inquire how it had been done. He said that the 'ends of the inner etch timbers, were the first to rot and give way, that they hod been cut off. and spliced neatlY, and strong at each pier and abutment, and that the' probable expense of this repair would not, lie was credibly informed exceed (as far as it had been made,) three thousand defiant, and to complete an entire new trunk. would irr quire the additional sum, of, about two thousand Dollars; thus making the whole structure as good as new, and permanent perhaps fur twelve or fifteen years. Surely, it is to be much regretted, that the same plan had not been adopted fur repairing the aqueduct at ibis place, by which its destruction might have been prevented, and the city saved the amount of a heavy Tax to pay fur rebuilding it. On enquiry I was informed that the repairs on the Freeport aqueduct, bad Leen directed and superintended en tirely by the Supervisor on this section of the canal, who it is said, is very competent to discharge the du ties assigned to him. It is surely of vital importance to the commonwealth that practical men in such mat tees should at all times, be selected fur such business; and it seems to mu thrt the late board of canal cunt. missieners have been very fortunate in their selection. —"money saved is money made."
